Gulf of Mexico (FL) Fishing Report 01.04.11

2010 has been a great year for Jawbreaker fishing charters. Regardless of the slow economy, the Gulf oil spill or even the grouper fishing closures that we have experienced(and the new ones that loom), we have survived yet another year to tell the wonderful stories of taking great folks out fishing in the great blue yonder that we call the Gulf of Mexico...a.k.a. my office.   Thursday's fishing charter was another one of those trips that left me feeling the lov...

Tampa Bay Fishing Report 08.23.10

Can you say 'nice grouper' in french? Well, Francois certainly can. He and wife, Marie, and daughter Izzy came all the way from France to fish the Jawbreaker. With the guidance of John and Alex Youngman from St.Petersburg, Florida-our European friends were able to experience Florida charter fishing from John's Pass. The weather was perfect and the fish were hungry. Our first stop was trolling for mackerel just off St.Pete beach and they were small and few. We moved out to the St.Petersbur...

Tampa Bay Fishing Report 06.01.10

Trolling in the Gulf of Mexico is at it's best right now. For those looking to put some fish in the boat without going too far offshore, trolling planers and spoons for Spanish mackerel, Kingfish, Bonitos and Barracudas is the way to go. These fish are being caught as close as 100 feet from the shoreline of St.Pete beach, Clearwater beach and John's Pass. We like to use both #1 and #2 planers with about 15 feet of 60# leader line attached to a small squid spoon or any other flashy lure th...

Tampa Bay Fishing Report 05.26.10

Monday's full-day fishing charter from St.Pete beach went off like fireworks on the 4th of July. We left Pass-a-grille pass, St.Pete beach at about 7a.m. with a livewell full of pinfish, threadfin, scaled sardines...you name it. The weather has been perfect for a couple of weeks, and this day was no different. Our first stop in 85 feet of water produced a few nice keeper size Gag grouper, but the shorts were thicker than snail snot. There must be a hundred short red grouper for every keep...

Tampa Bay Fishing Report 03.23.10

This past Saturday we were able to take a fishing charter out for a day of catch-and-release grouper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, about 10 miles west of Pass-a-Grille, St.Petersburg beach. Water temps are still hovering in the low 60's and this has kept allot of big Gag grouper in shallow. Unfortunately, still under a strict closure for all grouper species until April 1, and we had to throw back Gags as big as 18lbs...and many of them! Along with the hot grouper bite, we have been catchi...
