Fishing Reports

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 04.02.12

The Mosquito Lagoon flats fishing has been about as good as it gets these past couple weeks. Except for a couple days of windy weather, both the conditions and the fishing have been outstanding. Anglers have been encountering from 500 to over 1000 fish per day. Our three springtime species, redfish, trout, and black drum, have all been cooperating. Both fly and light tackle anglers are having success on a variety of lures and fly patterns. Big schools of mullet have arrived in the lagoon an...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 02.20.12

The past couple weeks have brought some changes to the Mosquito Lagoon which include a sudden rise in the water level along with some long awaited clear water. Since the water has cleared, the sun has been in hiding which has made the sight fishing difficult but not impossible. On days when it has been too windy to fish the flats, the St. Johns River has been providing some excellent fishing for American Shad on light tackle and fly. Shad are the freshwater version of a mini t...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 01.03.12

The flats fishing in Mosquito Lagoon the second half of this month has been good. Redfish, trout, and black drum have been plentiful on the flats. The water clarity is still not what it should be for this time of year but there are places where you can sight fish. This week's cooler temperatures along with some nights in the 40's next week will hopefully kill off the algae that has been plaguing us for several months. While the fish have been feeding the last couple weeks, we ha...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 11.10.11

Fishing is good on the Mosquito Lagoon! The past couple months have brought some tough fishing conditions to Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River. A severe algae bloom clouded the water making sight fishing difficult, if not impossible, in most locations. Most of the fish retreated to deeper water. If you could see schools of fish along the edges of sandbars, they responded well to the DOA Baitbuster and the BFL 5.5 lures.     Some schools of big redfish were roaming a...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 08.03.11

The redfish bite in Mosquito Lagoon is still extremely good. The   water clarity is very poor in many places making it tougher to spot the fish. Most mornings, you can find tailing fish or see them blasting mullet pods. As the morning moves on, the tails are less frequent and it is still hard to see in the water. By midday, you can spot the fish moving across the flat as long as the sun is out. Most of the fish we have been spotting are ten pounds and up making them a bit...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 07.21.11

We are almost halfway through what has been an unusual summer in Mosquito Lagoon. While the redfishing has remained consistently good, there are still no tarpon, and very few jacks, ladyfish, and other summer visitors. The only explanation seems to be the lack of glass minnow and pilchard schools. Why they are not here is anyone's guess. The trout fishing has dropped off a bit as well. Some of the spots that had been producing dozens of fish for great catch and release light tackle action have...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 04.25.11

The flats fishing has been excellent this month here in Mosquito Lagoon. The weather has been about as good as it gets as well. Schools of redfish have been roaming the flats and trout have been working mullet schools in slightly deeper water.   A couple weeks ago, Mike and his son Steven took a day of their spring break vacation to target some redfish. Both landed several nice reds with the 3" DOA CAL getting the most bites.   Josh and his father Tony enjoyed some great...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 03.02.11

Significant changes have taken place over the last few weeks but the one thing that has remained consistent is the excellent fishing on the flats. Just ten days ago, we were still experiencing frost in the morning and water temperatures in the low 50's. This week, the water was reaching 70 with air temperatures hitting 80. The white pelicans are flying off signaling an end to winter and the baitfish are getting more plentiful by the day. Huge schools of redfish can be found roaming the flats w...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 09.22.10

Asudden rise in the water level of the lagoon system has had a huge impact on the fishing the past week. While the redfish are biting aggressively, the challenge the past several days has been finding them in significant numbers. With lots of areas that have been nearly dry all summer now flooded, the fish have many more places to roam. Most of the fish have moved from the places they have been frequenting all summer long. The high water is cloudy in many areas and the grass which had...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 08.18.10

The summer fishing continues to be outstanding here in central Florida. Redfish have been providing the most consistent action with large schools being encountered on most days. These fish have been biting well and will chase down lures fished on the surface providing some explosive bites. There are a few tarpon around but they have yet to appear inshore in significant numbers.   During the first week of the month, I spent a couple days fishing with Capt. Blair Wiggins, host of the Ad...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 05.27.10

The month of May brought continued great fishing the east central Florida. Schools of big redfish have been showing consistently and reds of all sizes are feeding on the wide variety of baitfish that have arrived this month. Trout, ladyfish, a few tarpon, and even some bluefish are feeding around the schools of bait as well. With the summer just around the corner, the tarpon fishing will only get better each day.   For the light tackle anglers, use lures imitating baitfish such as the...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 03.04.10

The weather here in central Florida has been mostly cold and unpredictable but the flats fishing has been consistently good. Redfish and black drum have been abundant with most of the fish being found in schools of 25-200 fish. They have been willing to eat a variety of well placed small soft plastics and flies. Both the reds and drum have been feeding in very shallow water and have been extremely spooky. The fish must be approached slowly and quietly with your casts landing at least ten fee...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 11.09.09

November 7, 2009 Some high winds have descended upon central Florida and are forecast to remain with us for much of the coming week. The wind has made sight fishing difficult but we have managed to catch some nice redfish and seatrout despite the challenging conditions. Water levels are still quite high but the temperature has dropped significantly with yesterday morning's water at 66 degrees. Last week, prior to the arrival of the cooler temperatures, I made a trip to Mosquito...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 10.16.09

October 15, 2009   The fishing in Mosquito Lagoon so far this month has been challenging. The water is high and, in many places, cloudy making sight fishing difficult. On the positive side, the weather has remained unseasonably warm. This has kept the tarpon around as well as the large schools of baitfish. When you can find the redfish, they are willing to eat and I saw many tailing fish during the past couple weeks. Recent trips have resulted in varying levels of succes...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 09.17.09

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Guide - Capt. Chris Myers Fishing Report September 17, 2009 With the water level having risen over a foot during the past several weeks, the redfish have plenty of areas to visit that were inaccessible during the summer. Many of the large redfish have moved to the deeper basins for their spawn. When you can find the reds on the flats, however, they have been willing to eat a variety of lures. Much of my time the past couple weeks has been dedicated to chasing...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 09.03.09

Mosquito Lagoon Report Late August and September are typically the slowest months for the charter fishing business in this area. This gives me plenty of time to fish during what is one of my favorite times of year. That is exactly what I have been doing the past couple weeks. Variety is the name of the game and it is often fun to see how many different types you can catch in a day. Tarpon, however, are my main target and I spend most mornings targeting them. While they are fun to catch, they...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 08.25.09

August 23, 2009   The past two weeks have offered some very good fishing opportunities except for a few days of windy weather caused by a passing tropical front. Nearly every day brings legitimate chances to catch multiple species such as redfish, black drum, seatrout, tarpon, snook, and jack crevalle. Last Monday, Jim and his son-in-law Brian drove up from Melbourne to target large redfish in Mosquito Lagoon. Prior to spotting reds, we encountered a large school o...
