Santee Cooper Lakes Fishing Report 04.01.13

As many of you know we have had a cold Spring, but we've still been getting good quality bass, just not the numbers like you do in Spring time. If you get around the right ones, you'll look like a "hero", but you can also "zero" pretty easy. Bass have not spawned yet, so plenty of opportunity here in April/May to get a nice one for your wall and/or good numbers of bass. Too many patterns and lures to mention, just be versatile with bait selection. My rule of...

Santee Cooper Lakes Fishing Report 03.09.13

Largemouth bass fishing is improving with warming air and water temps (50ish in morning warming to 54 by pm). Bass are still in staging areas from deep to shallow water, but will cotintue to move shallower. Water clarity is fairly stained most of lake, so try to find clearer water near backwater areas protected from winds. Slow moving baits like jigs, creature baits, and worms are working best. If you get some wind, use more searching/reaction baits like rattling hard baits or chatter/blade...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 02.10.13

Largemouth Bass: Fair. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports the largemouth bass bite remains somewhat slow, but the fish being caught have good weight to them. Soon the warming air and water temperatures will have bass more active and more moving up to shallows. Lake level is down a few feet and water is fairly muddy for Wateree after recent rains and discharge. Concentrate on rocky points and banks using bright color vibrating cranking hardbait. Also, you can go back through produ...

Santee Cooper Lakes Fishing Report 01.26.13

Well, off to good start on Santee Cooper so far in 2013. We have had a relatively mild winter and there was/is plenty of grass in the lake like hydrilla, eel grass, primrose, floating heart, and hyacintha. Here is a nice one here in Jan and plenty more to come. Lake is down about 3 feet now, so be careful #1 with running boat, but also look for shallow (2-8 feet) of water with structure (grass or wood or both) near deep water access like 10-15 feet. Best patterns right now are using hard cr...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 12.05.12

Largemouth Bass: Good. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports bass continue to bite good with warm weather. Locate shad schools with your marine electronics, such as #Lowrance HDS units, in the creeks and short pockets/coves off the main lake. As water temps cool, follow the bass toward their deeper Winter locations on the main lake and major creek arms. Try structure near the shore that will hold bass waiting to ambush prey coming by such as rocky points, rip rap, deep docks, laydow...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 11.13.12

Largemouth Bass: Excellent. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports bass are biting good with the cooling temperatures and fish feeding up for the winter. There remains an abundance of shad schools in middle of creeks, pockets, and coves, however not much schooling bass activity. Keep a topwater or rattling bait ready to cast just in case. Focus on structure near the shore that will hold bass waiting to ambush prey coming by such as rocky secondary points, docks, laydowns, stumps, boa...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 10.12.12

Largemouth Bass: Excellent. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports bass fishing continues to improve with bigger and more bass biting well. Recent bass tournaments show the overall weights continue to climb. Fall bass will follow the baitfish to back of creeks and pockets, feeding up before Winter. They will use multiple pieces of structure and move alot, so be versatile by fishing a variety of cover and using multiple types of lures. Bass can be caught shallow around rocky points, g...

Santee Cooper Lakes Fishing Report 09.29.12

With cooling Fall temps, largemouth have started to respond and biting better and moving to the shallows. Both Marion and Moultrie lakes are still at about full pool with 75 feet sea level. Plenty of water and multiple types of vegetation growing well. Fish the grass with frogs, swimming worms, plastic texas rigged worms. Some fish also coming off wood cover like cypress trees, docks, and logs; use spinnerbaits and worms like a senko/creature bait or shakeyhead worm. Good Fall fishing! Capt...

Santee Cooper Lakes Fishing Report 09.14.12

SC had its first cool snap and largemouth have started to respond and biting better. Water temp now for the first time in the mid 70s. Both Marion and Moultrie lakes are still at about full pool with 75 feet sea level. Plenty of water and multiple types of vegetation growing well. Fish the grass with frogs, swimming worms, plastic texas rigged worms. Some fish also coming off wood cover like cypress trees, docks, and logs; use spinnerbaits and worms like a senko or shakeyhead worm. Good Fal...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 09.05.12

Largemouth Bass: Good. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports that with cooling temps, this puts bass into a transition period where they can be caught shallow or deep. Early in the morning or on cloudy days, bass can be caught around shallow cover such as rocky points, grass, and laydowns using topwater, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and worms. Once the sun gets up, docks and deeper points/underwater humps can yield nice largemouth using plastic worms on texas rig, shakeyhead, and Carol...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 08.29.12

Largemouth Bass: Good. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports that with warm water temperatures bass remain in deep water; however, with cooling rains and air temperatures some fish are being caught shallow. Early in the morning fish around rocky points with shad topwater baits. Around the bank grass use buzzbaits, frogs, swimming worms/jigs, and spinnerbaits. Finally, docks are starting to produce again with plastic worms; plus crankbaits on the concrete launching ramps.  For d...

Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports bass can be caught around bank grass, lily pads, or floating heart early in the morning or evening with buzzbaits, frog, spinnerbait, swimjig/worm or texas rigged plastic. Also, try around wood cover like cypress trees, stumps, and docks with a spinnerbait during lowlight conditions and then texas rigged plastics when sun gets up.  Around eel grass fish rattletraps, fluke style plastics or plastic worms...

Lake Wateree Fishing Report 08.08.12

Largemouth Bass: Good. Captain Chris Heinning (803-236-1257) reports bass can still be caught, even with warm summer tempertaures (water temp 88 degrees). The Catabwa River has many smaller lakes below Lake Wylie, that can be a nice change of pace for summer fishing as their is some water flow and water levels remain high, thus bass can still be caught shallow. In morning or late evenings, try topwater walking baits/poppers and buzzbaits. Then, chartreuse and white spinnerbaits around s...

Santee Cooper Lakes Fishing Report 06.11.12

Bass fishing has improved on Santee Cooper lakes after a slow-down to post-spawn.  Bass can be caught shallow in morning, but near deep water access places like ditches, drains, dropoffs, points, etc.  Buzzbaits, swimming worms/jigs, spinnerbaits are working along grass in morning.  After sun gets up, fish shad of trees, docks, or deeper places using soft plastic worms.  Water temp is trying to get into 80s, but each rain cools lake into high 70s.  Good Fishing!&nbs...
