Osceola County Lakes Fishing Report 10.01.12
Went fishing with my wife this week on one of the areas small lakes and really noticed that the fish were biting much better than they have been. We took 3 dozen shiners with us and at one time were catching them one after the other. Did not catch any big fish but just to get bit that much was kinda FUN ! The water temperture is cooling down a little and before we know it those 65 degree days will be upon us. I have also heard that the speckled perch are biting which is ano...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 08.17.12
Fished East Lake Toho and 4 or 5 different local lakes this week. Fishing, for the most part, remains the same. You can get an early top water bite - caught a couple of big fish on a top water frog. Once the sun comes up and the heat starts coming on, you will need to go deeper with plastic baits. The state opened the flood control structures on one lake in the Alligator chain, and I was able to pick up quite a few fish on a Carolina Rig with a 7 inch U-tailed...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 06.24.12
Fishing has been a little slow this past week. Still catching bass over submerged hydrilla, but the bite has been shutting down when the sun gets high and bright. Shiners still working for the live bait fisherman. Buzz baits, top water toads and frogs are accounting for a lot of bass early and late in the day,but in the full sun hours, the smart fisherman switches to weedless worms or anything to fish down in the water column. Stick worms (senko t...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 06.09.12
We are just starting one of my favorite times of the year. With the seasonal rains coming, the feeder creeks and streams that run into the lakes are just starting to flow. Bass are opportunistic feeders and love to ambush their food as it floats or swims by. A variety of different baits will work. I like fishing Zoom Super Flukes in shallow running water situations. Bass love them. Try watermelon color in clear water and June bug in stained.&nbs...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 05.09.12
The fishing on East Lake Toho remains steady with schooling bass busting bait in the morning and evening, It has been some great topwater action and when they quit hitting on the top we were able to continue catching them on plastic worms near and in the reeds. They seemed to prefer Redbug or Red shad colors.
Monday I noticed we had a mayfly hatch going on. This is the time of the year to break out your flyrod for some fantastic topwater popper action. It should be easy...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 05.01.12
The bass in West Lake Toho have begun their summer pattern and you can find lots of fish in open water. Look for them to school right after daylight. and throughout the day if conditions are right. The ones we ran into were a little on the small side but what they lack in size they make up in numbers and enthusiasm. Any bait that mimicks a small bait fish will get you hookups and for some fun try going with ultra light tackle. For some bigger fish we used live wild shiners fished over...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 04.21.12
We have been on East Lake 4 or 5 times the last week or so and things are starting to change a little. Bass are on the outside of the grass line in a little deeper water and out from shore around the matted grass islands. Soft plastics seemed to be what they wanted in the Junebug and Junebug Red color. I did take some shiners on one trip and caught some fish up to 4 pounds. The bite seems to be real early for an hour or two and when the sun comes up we had to switch to bouncing baits o...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 04.10.12
The Bass on West Lake have moved to the outer edge of the grass and out into the lake over submerged hydrilla. They are still hitting live shiners. Guides are not seeing the numbers that we had last month, but still getting bit , especially early and late in the day.
Shellcrackers are biting good in both lakes. I was on East Lake this morning and I watched two guys reeling them in one after another. Worms and nightcrawlers are working good. Anywhere with a hard she...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 03.31.12
Large mouth bass are still biting on West Lake Toho, coming into post-spawn conditions. Bass are a little deeper than they were in previous weeks, still hitting live shiners, but the artificial bite has been a little tough. On my last trip out, a lady from Italy caught a 9 pounder.
Shellcrackers are biting well in open water over the shell beds in both lakes. Red worms are the preferred bait. Have heard reports of up to 75 fish per trip.
Good fishi...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 03.19.12
I had two panfish trips last week. The Crappie are bedding in three to five feet of water. I used minnows under a small bobber with 20-24 inches of leader. Once we found them we caught all we needed. Look for them around the dark green clumps of gator grass.
Also, Bass are still in the shallows. We caught one big-bellied, 7 1/2 pound female that had not spawned. I am averaging approximately 20 or so Bass per trip. ...
Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) Fishing Report 03.05.12
Fished both East and West Lake Toho last week and there are still a few bass spawning in the shallows. Wild shiners are your best bet but an assortment of artificials worked well. Try flukes and stick worms as well as slow moving worms. Also try hard baits that mimic minnows or bream, The original Rapala worked well in the gold color. Remember if you are targeting spawners stay on a hard bottom and away from areas with a large build up of vegetation. With the warming weathe...
