Richard B. Russell State Park: Located on a 26,500-acre lake, Richard B. Russell State Park offers some of the state's finest fishing and boating. The park's campground and fully equipped cottages are located on or near the water's edge for a relaxing getaway. A nature trail follows the shoreline to one of the oldest steel pin bridges in the area, loops through the adjoining woods and returns to the beach. The park's 18-hole championship golf course, Arrowhead Pointe, was named 2nd Best New Affordable Public Course in America by Golf Digest in 2005. The course features a LEED Certified clubhouse, golf pro, and junior/senior citizen discounts. Several Indian sites were excavated near the park in 1980 before the lake was filled, indicating that Paleo-Indians lived in the area more than 10,000 years ago. This area is now called Rucker's Bottom and lies deep within the waters of Lake Richard B. Russell. All park facilities are designed for wheelchair accessibility, including the swimming beach.

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 05.23.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 73 DEGREES   Bass fishing is fair. Points and the larger secondary points are getting pounded. With the temperatures warming fast use the plastics to catch bass. Key areas to look for are those points that contain the most wood. The larger bass are relating to the lay downs and submerged stumps for most of the day. The wind has been active at some time during the day, mostly afternoons and this gets the bass shallow where t...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 05.17.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 68 DEGREES   Bass fishing is excellent. First thing in the morning bass are on shallow clay banks and any rip rap or rocks all over the lake feeding on the shad that are spawning. A small buzz bait, a small spinner bait or a ¼ ounce Rat L Trap will work all day. If there is any wind, work the wind blown banks with a small crank bait, like a ¼ ounce Rat T Trap in the chrome and black or a number 5 Shad Rap in s...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 05.10.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 68 DEGREES   Bass fishing is good. Blue bird skies brought on warmer temperatures and there is a good bite during the afternoon heat. Good quality bass are still coming out of Beaver Dam Creek and up the Savannah River. The top water bite is good early in the morning. Use a Skitter Walk and Chug Bugs in the shallow water. Use the plastics early concentrating on lay down trees and stumps. Be careful not to&nbs...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 05.02.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 67 DEGREES   Bass fishing is very good and the spotted bass are roaming around the rocks and filling up on shad. Largemouth are relating more to wood cover or rock and wood combinations. The rip rap rock around the bridges is still producing good fish this week and anglers are using everything from 1/4 ounce spinner baits to Shad Raps along these rocks to catch both the spots and largemouth. Medium size rocky banks and poin...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 04.25.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 67 DEGREES   Bass fishing is good and the males are everywhere, just use a green trick worm all day. The fish are still moving now and are slowly committing themselves to find a good spawning area. Many of the bass are still staging up, but you can still catch bass on the shallow, flat shelves and around the spawning areas. Shad and Olive Green X-Raps are great colors to be using this week. Spotted bass are still roaming al...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 04.19.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 61 DEGREES   Bass fishing is great. Husky Jerks are still hard to beat along the edges of any wood. The buck bass along with some females that haven't gone to the beds are hanging out here. Crank baits like the Shad Raps and the DT6 in baby bass and shad along with spinnerbaits will work all during the spring. Look for the bass to be on the secondary points and back to the shallow water for...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 04.12.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 61 DEGREES   Bass fishing is good. The top water baits are now starting to work along with spinnerbaits and cranks. My baits of choice this week include the Skitter Walk, Glass Shad Rap and a jig. The bass are from the secondary points and back and are holding to or near wood. The bucks are busy fanning the beds and the females are close by. The warm weather is working on the shallow water and tempe...

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 58 DEGREES   Bass fishing is good. The spinnerbaits and the crank baits are starting to work. Use the Rapala Glass Shad Rap and a jig. The bass are from the secondary points and back and are holding to or near wood. The bucks will be up soon fanning the beds. Points with rock and wood are still holding bass and remember not all the bass will spawn at the same time. Throwing the Chatter baits and the Alab...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 03.29.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 53 DEGREES   Bass fishing is good and this week’s full moon has a lot of small bass shallow. The upper reaches of the Savannah River are getting most of the bass angers this week. The creeks and coves that have the heavy submerged stumps are getting a lot of fishing pressure. Spinnerbaits and plastics are flooding these areas. Flukes and Rapala X Raps and Rapala #5 Shad Raps are working. For the bass that are still hol...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 03.21.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 53 DEGREES   Bass fishing is good, but the fishing slowed down from mid week. Another cold front will hit the area with lows dropping into the 20's. Bedding bass will be the focus this week with the full moon on the 27th of March. The majority of the bass have not locked on tight to the beds. Many shallow water bass can be found and the shallow running Shad Raps along with the DT4's and McSticks. Fish the shall...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 03.14.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 3.4 FEET, CLEAR & 52 DEGREES   Bass fishing is fair. The bass are out of the main lake up and half way into the creeks and rivers. Slow rolling a 1/2 ounce spinner bait is working on a few bass, but the better bite is coming off the Ito Vision 110 jerks baits, Glass Shad Raps and DT Baits. Expect to find anglers scattered all over the lake concentrating their efforts on structure, main lake points and secondary points. The...

LAKE RUSSELL IS       FULL, CLEAR & 52 DEGREES   Bass fishing is fair. The bass are moving out of the main lake up into the creeks and rivers. Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 02.21.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 52 DEGREES   Bass fishing is fair but the morning bite is slow. The lake is stained and more rain is on the way and the creeks will see some heavy rain this week. The water temperature is averaging about 51 degrees out in the middle of the lake, but warmer water can be found back in the coves and around the grassy spawning areas. It is a few days early to expect the pre spawn bass to start to move up. Start on the secondary...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 02.15.13

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & 52 DEGREES   Bass fishing is barely fair as the water temperatures continue to fall and cold fronts move through one after the other. Finding the best time to go fishing is hard, but do check those feeding tables before heading out. The spotted bass are still biting Zoom finesse worms and Rapala DT10 and DT14 off the wind blown rocky points and up in the Savannah River. Stay with the wind when fishing for the best results. Also try...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 01.24.13

January 24, 2013   LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 3.2 FEET CLEAR & 54 DEGREES   Bass fishing is fair but changes will happen all week. With the bright sunny days, the bass got a little sluggish but good keepers were still being caught. Crank baits in the winter are still catching fish but have the Carolina rigs ready also. The bigger bass will react to the slow moving bait Bandit or the Rapalas in the DT10 or DT6 in shad and silver. The water staying good and clean for...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 01.11.13

January 11, 2013   LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 3.1 FEET CLEAR & 54 DEGREES   Bass fishing is fair and there are largemouth and spotted bass biting. Most of the bass are coming out of shallow water later in the day and are being caught early on flukes and Senko’s. The crank baits are working on rocky points on the main lake. Shad and green tiger are good colors Make long casts with these baits to the points and crank them slow. Use a slow retrieve and stop the b...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 01.04.13

January 4, 2013   LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 3.1 FEET CLEAR & 54 DEGREES Bass fishing is slow and the cold weather and winds moved the bass out into deeper water. On the warmer sunny days, these bass will move up in search for food but not real shallow. The rip rap is a good place to find these fish after the sun comes up and the heat gets on the rocks. The slight change in temperature, one to three degrees can get the bait fish active. If the water is stained, try throwing...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 12.28.12

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 4.1 FEET CLEAR & 56 DEGREES   Bass fishing is slow and there are only a few anglers on the lake. The drop shot and Carolina rig seem to be the lure of choice right now, but we have been catching some on the jigging spoon early in the morning. The bait fish are really stacked now into the creeks, pockets and major ditches, so keep watch the Lowrance sonar and find the bait schools half way back in the creeks. The bait and bass are anywhere from 20 to 40...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 12.21.12

December 21, 2012   LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 4.1 FEET CLEAR & 56 DEGREES Bass fishing is slow. The majority of the bass caught are holding tight to some form of wood cover. A few good fish can be caught in brush piles in around seven feet of water and deeper. Try tying on a three of four inch finesse or pencil style worms in red shad color for any stained or off color water and the pearl for the really clear water. Rig it on twelve or fourteen pound test line and a 1/4 oun...

Richard B. Russell Lake Fishing Report 12.14.12

December 14, 2012 LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 4.1 FEET CLEAR & 59 DEGREES Bass is fishing. This is a good lake to fish during the winter months. The spotted bass seem to rule the water and can easily be found. Spots love to hang around rock and finding an ample supply of rock on this lake is not a problem. Everything from spinner baits to six inch finesse worms will usually work. Try down the lake near the dam or up the Savannah River near the state park. A slow moving DT10 or a #5 jo...

December 7, 2012   LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 3.3 FEET CLEAR & 59 DEGREES Bass fishing is good and the spotted bass are very active. Spots will be on the rocky points and finding an ample supply of rock on this lake is not a problem. Everything from spinner baits to six inch finesse worms will usually work. A slow moving Rapala DT10 or a #5 jointed Shad Rap are great picks for the wintertime baits. The key will be to keep moving and fish as much rock as possible all day and...

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 8.40 FEET, CLEAR & 73 DEGREES       Bass fishing is good and the water is cooling down moving the bait schools shallow. Stay down lake where the waters are a little warmer in the backs of the creeks. Use small finesse worms or a trick worm as well as the jigs and the dark greens are best. Keep a pearl Super Fluke ready all day for any schooling action. The bass will move shallow on a warmer afternoon and small crank baits on poi...

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.6 FEET, CLEAR & 73 DEGREES       Bass fishing is good as the water temperature dip. Many anglers are using those Carolina Rigs along rocky banks and points to bag a limit of two pounders daily.
