Holston River

Location: Holston Proper, Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol, Tennessee         The Holston Proper has been fishing very well the past week on topwater poppers. The smallies were in a heavy feeding mode chasing minnows all throughout the river system. The cold front that hit us this weekend will slow the fishing until we warm back up in the coming week. January 14, 2010 South Holston Tailwater Today on the South Holston Tailwater near Bristol, Tennessee it was dry flies. We got their just after the water came down and started to fish near the Weirs. There were fish taking nymphs just before they got to the surface, a small zebra midge swung was the ticket. As the sun rose higher in the sky and that warmth started building the hatches started. South Holston Tailwater Report It was cold, temperatures in the mid twenties with snow flurries but my good friend and fellow guide had to try out his new Clacks driftboat on the South Holston Tailwater near Bristol, Tennessee. There was very little fish activity so when there were some fish sipping on the surface, dry flies had to be thrown. December 18, 2009 On recent float trips this week, if you saw rising fish, they were catchable, put a size 20 paraquill BWO on the surface and be ready. There were also some sections that a small olive Woolly Bugger was the ticket.  There is a big winter storm heading our way for the weekend.  If it is snowing Saturday and they TVA is not generating, wading should be great.  Some of the best fishing times have been with BWO's in snow showers. The TVA is giving some wade opportunities in the afternoon on the weekends but we are seeing better success on high water float trips.
