Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 05.08.13

One of our best clients, Jon Clement came down again for a “mental health” day.  It’s his term for a day on the water, by himself, to unwind from his rat-race travel schedule.  Jon is not one for pictures so I will make this short and sweet.   Jon arrived at the normal time and we shoved off aboard The BEAST.  We hit the Hardtail spots and gathered some baits quickly then moved out to the patches to see if we could find some Ballyhoo....

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 04.15.13

This winter/spring transition has been a bit out of the ordinary.  We’ve had weird weather and fish patterns.  Fishing for our preferred bait has been our biggest struggle but we always seem to get ‘r done.   Eric and his son Jason met us at the dock for a full day trip and they wanted to get Jason his first Sailfish.  We loaded them up and headed for the bait patches.  We picked up the Hardtails easily and headed for the worm beds. &n...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 04.03.13

The weather has been a bit on the iffy side even though spring is upon us.  The fishing has been pretty good and we’ve been pretty busy.  No complaints form us about either.   Shawn met us at the usual departure time and he came solo for his ¾ day.  Hey, you can’t beat that if you don’t feel like sharing time on the rods.  We went through the normal introductions and turned The BEAST loose.  We made way to one of our...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 03.18.13

We met Dax at 7 AM and he brought along his mate, Olli.  They came all the way from the UK to try some of our S. Florida fishing.  We blasted off on our ¾ day trip, heading for the bait patches.  The Hardtails were sort of slow but the Ballyhoo were worse.  We finally got enough bait for the day and headed out.   We fished the surface and 1 down rod for a while and caught 3 big Barracuda and a Silky Shark, all of them coming on the baits do...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 02.28.13

It’s been a while since my last report because Devon and I have been very busy.  I’ve been trying to find time to sit down at this computer and write.  But hey... any day on the water is a good day!   They say that a picture is worth 1000 words so this report will be less written words but a virtual essay of pictures.   We had Scott, Amber, Greg and Sandy arrive for a ¾ day trip.  They were on a severe time crunch in try...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 12.05.12

We had 2 really nice trips last weekon the approaching full moon.  These trips were loaded with fast, smoking hot action!   Steve, Ben, and Landon joined us for a full day of fishing.  They traveled all the way from Oklahoma to try some of Miami’s renowned offshore game fishing.  Devon and I unleashed The BEAST at 7 am and we headed out.  I throttled up the 600 ponies to cruise mode and began looking for some Hardtails.    ...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 11.24.12

We recently had two day-trips with our friend Brad and son Chris. We really look forward to doing trips in the winter because that is prime time fishing in S. Florida. November is very good because we get good runs of dolphin as well as Sailfish, Tuna, and King Mackerel.    Brad and Chris met us for the 7 a.m. blast off. We greeted each other and untied the BEAST. I immediately headed out to one of our best Hardtail spots. We got them quickly, so I powered up an...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 10.22.12

We had a couple of back-to-back trips this past week that turned out pretty darn good.  The weather blew like crazy last weekend so we postponed one of the trips until the winds and seas calmed down.  These are the stories and I’m sticking to them.   Chris, her husband Drew, and their friend Steve arrived at the dock before Devon and I.  I think they were a bit anxious!  I met Chris a few years ago through a mutual friend and she decided to...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 10.01.12

A very good customer of mine, Jon from Atlanta, booked an all day trip with us to acclimate his kids to offshore fishing.  Jon has fished with me well over 50 times dating back as far as 1998.  I’ve fished with his wife, Melissa, a time or two but this was the first time I ever met the children.  I remember when the kids were born and now Ryan is 11 and Caroline is 8.  I must be getting old!  His plan was to see how the kids could handle the blue wa...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 09.26.12

I have no idea what happened this month.  Traditionally we have a great Cubera bite in September but everyone seemed to want to fish in August this year.  I’m not sure why this is especially with a full moon coming up this weekend.  The congregations of fish have done the bulk of their spawning ritual and now they are on the feed trying to recover their strength after their yearly ordeal.  Oh well, it is what it is!   Jorge had already booke...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 09.04.12

I got a call from my Brother-in-law, Michael, who wanted to set up a day to go fishing with his daughters and their friend.  He wanted to get his girls out for an afternoon of fishing before they went back to school.  I told Mike it wasn‘t a problem and we set up an afternoon run.  Afternoon trips can be tough during August with daytime temps reaching 90+ degrees but he said that Berkeley doesn’t do mornings very well.  I told him I was sure we cou...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.31.12

Fishing report August 2012 August 29, 2012 We have been fishing in August with phenomenal sailfish catches. It used to be that sailfish in Miami was a winter event but for the last few years we have been getting sailfish year round. August and September have proved to be one of our best months for sailfish. Apart from the heat, the flat calm seas also help in the experience and enjoyment of our clients going fishing. The change in water current, or edge as we call i...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.24.12

We did 2 more follow up trips to “Nastyville”.  El Nasty had made a chump out of us on the last trip and we were into these trips for redemption.  Of course we wanted to get our customers on Cubera Snapper as well.  The last 2 trips were a struggle with heavy current and foul weather.     Ryan and Matt met us at the dock at the usual time and they were pumped up to get after them.  I warned them of the 2 previous trips but let the...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.17.12

Devon and I were excited to begin our Cubera charters.  We were fired up and ready to go.  All reports we had heard from friends who had been out there previously, were that the fish were not there or not biting.  Several reports came to us of guys fishing 2 straight nights to catch 1 fish.  Oh Boy, this does not sound good.     Brian and his friends, Mike, Brett, and Phillip met us at the dock at 3 PM for our scheduled start.  Our hopes were high...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.14.12

The last 2 of our day trips were right before “Bug” season opened.  They were pretty productive and had our guests smiling.  John brought his wife Vicki, son Cam, and daughter Katie along for a ¾ day trip.  We blasted out at 7 AM and made our way immediately for some bait.  We caught plenty of Hardtails but the Ballyhoo were trouble.  We stayed a bit longer than usual because there were some really nice Mangrove Snapper in the chum. &nb...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.14.12

For the past two weeks we have had a variety of different trips.  The majority have been daytime swordfish trips, one combo day/night sword trip, some trips on the edge and some trips for mahis in the Gulfstream.  Starting with the swordfish, I have been lucky enough to be averaging about one swordfish per trip.  We haven’t seen any really big fish.  Our biggest was about 200 pounds and the smallest at around 80 pounds.  The one combo trip (day/night) we did h...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 07.20.12

Fishing in Miami has been pretty good despite the warm temperatures and stormy conditions. It seems like on most trips we've had improvise and fish around the weather. Catches have ranged from snapper and some grouper on night trips to bonito, barracudas, muttons, and sailfish during the day. We have also been catching some tarpon around the bridges and in canals. Shun and his friends Gary and Cory wanted to catch tarpon and we had good action with three shots. Unfortunately, the fi...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 07.05.12

In the past three weeks, I did a trip to Bimini, half a dozen trips on the edge, and a couple of mahi trips in the Gulfstream. Stating with the edge, there was a surprising number of sailfish around. We had a few days were we caught 4 sailfish in a day and that is rather good considering sailfish season usually ends in late May. Besides sailfish, there were also some kingfish and some bonitas. We only caught a few blackfin tuna and it seems that the blackfin bite has slowed down already....

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 07.02.12

Steffen and Silmara, our favorite husband/wife team from Munich Germany, booked 3 days with us. Steffen wanted to do 2-day trips and a night trip for Swordfish on the 3rd day. On Day 1 they arrived at the dock fashionably late. We were ready and waiting, so after a few “How have you been?” moments, we turn The BEAST out to begin this trilogy. The day was eerily flat, not a breath of wind, virtually a dead sea. We did the Hardtail bait thing first, as usual. After collecting abou...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 06.20.12

Report Date: June 16, 2012   As is typical in South Florida, the charter business slows down a bit in the summer, but I still managed to get out 10 o the past 15 days, and overall the fishing has been very good. I did have a few half day trips that the fishing was a bit slow, but we did catch quality fish on every trip. Fishing on the edge has been producing some decent kings from 10 to 30 pounds. The majority of the kings...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 06.12.12

Summer is here! The weather is heating up and so is the action on the reef. June is the beginning of the bonito run down our coastline. As we know from the movie "Stepbrothers", bonito are a gamefish and are very big, averaging 10-20 pounds and sometimes larger. Bonitos take over the reef during the summer months from June to September, moving through in huge schools the size of football fields and eating everything they come across. On the drift boat, it livens the action up...

have been extremely busy the last few weeks and finding time to sit down to write my fishing reports has been next to impossible. The month of May was pretty weird to say the least. So far, June is not doing much better either. We have run the gauntlet in regards to the weather. We've had record rainfall to bluebird skies, gale force winds to no breeze, strong current to barely moving current, and big rough seas to slick calm water. The tunas are definitely here.  Blackfin tunas in Miami and yellowfin tunas in the Bahamas.  Starting with Miami, the big blackfins have shown up and in big numbers.  For the past week or so we have been averaging 3 to 6 tunas per trip.  The fish are decent in size as well averaging 25 to 35 pounds.  We have been catching most of the balckfin tunas on the kite baits but caught some on the flatlines as well.  Bait was tough for a while, but is now getting a bit...

We left the dock at 7 and headed to Bug. Pilchards were thick on the mark and we loaded up pretty quick with a few cigar minnows as well. Conditions have been a bit better south so we made it to the edge and began trolling south. We put out a spread of swimming ballyhoo and feathers and started to make way. The wind was blowing about 15 knots out of the ENE and there was a decent water color out front that improved as we headed south. About 45 minutes after deploying the spread, we had a do...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 03.19.12

The last couple of months have been interesting to say the least. First, the weather has been unusually warm for us as well as the fish. The warm water seems to have thrown off some of the patterns. We haven't seen the strong numbers of sailfish that we have in previous years. Even though, we're still getting at least one to two shots on most trips with some effort and patience. On other hand some fish have been very consistent with the warm weather. We \have been catching nice...

We have been averaging about 2 to 5 sailfish per day and our best day since the last report we caught 6. Not bad, but not what it should be. We did have one trip where we did not catch one. Report Date: January 16, 2017   Sailfish season has been a little late in arriving but as we are getting more and more cold fronts rolling in, the sailfish bite is picking up. December is off to a great start. Although we have been battling some gusty winds and periodic days with little to no current, with a little work we are making it happen. I have fished several days since my last report and the conditions have been varied. One day we will have 3 knots of north current and then other days little to no current. The current has kind of dictated the way our day goes. Good current flow and the fishing is very consistent. Little or no current leads to the captain...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 12.08.11

Report Date: December 7, 2012 Big African Pompanos The wind finally laid down after an extremely windy two weeks. It laid down just in time for us. Today I had a great customer and good friend, Roger, fishing with us. Roger and I have caught practically every species that inhabits our area and have caught countless amounts of sailfish and swordfish as well as wahoo, dolphin, kings, tunas etc. Today we were looking at...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 12.03.11

Over the last few months I've been preparing for the upcoming season. The first order of business was to upgrade the boat and after months of careful consideration I decided to go with a 28' Whitewater. Whitewater boats have an excellent reputation for providing an excellent ride and are built with quality in mind. The boat is rigged Key West style with light tackle fishing in mind. Another important aspect of this boat is that it will give me added speed, comfort, and range for tho...

A very frequent customer who has fished with me more than 50 times, called me last week because he heard the Dolphin were moving through the area. He was going to be in town right before Turkey Day and wanted to see if we had any time available to get him out for a "mental health day". That is Jon's term for taking an extra layover day to get out on our boat, catch some fish, and forget about work! I told him that we could hook him up on Tuesday. Jon arrived on time as usu...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 11.21.11

Report Date: November 20, 2011 Even though we are still plagued with green water and little or no current, the fishing still remains good, as long as you are willing to venture outside the box. Typical depths for fishing on the edge with kites targeting sailfish, mahi, kings etc. is usually from 100 to 200 feet in depth. The only problem is that we have continued to have green water and little current in that zone. We have been venturing a bit farther offshore and anywhere from 300 to 5...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 11.09.11

Fall has finally arrived and along with it some good to very good fishing.   Offshore, the dolphin (mahi-mahi) are migrating south, sailfish are showing up in better numbers, skipjack tuna are finding the live chum and hitting the kite baits, down deep there are mutton snapper, grouper, and amberjack. You might have to pick your day(s) if you have a weak stomach as cold fronts are now moving through and bringing windy conditions to our area for a few days. There are usually a few days...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 11.09.11

The past few weeks we have definitely had our fair share of inclement weather. Besides it being rather windy, we also had 4 days of torrential rain. The rain is gone and the wind will come and go with each approaching cold front. The good news is the cold fronts definitely spark up the fishing which is why South Florida is a hard place to beat in the winter when it comes to fishing. Before the heavy rain, the fishing was actually very, very good. With decent looking water and good north curren...

Last Friday I was down at the dock doing some maintenance and prepping The BEAST for our trip on Saturday. The day was sunny with a very light breeze and pleasant temperatures in the 80’s. By evening some cloud cover had moved in. Saturday morning Devon and I arrived at the dock to find 20 knot winds. As daylight broke we saw gray skies that threatened rain. What’s with this? I thought the forecast was for this front to push through overnight and winds of 13-18 knots. Well… It is what it is...

The good news is that the daytime sword bite is still on fire. We have caught at least one and mostly 2 to 4 swordfish on every single one of our trips. It has been very consistent and most of the fish we have been catching have been by hand cranking all the way from the bottom. We have caught swordfish from 30 pounds up to about 200 pounds. Dec 14th, 2010     I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. This is the time of year to spend with family and friends and what a better way to spend the day with them than to go fishing. We have had some really decent cold fonts roll through South Florida, but cold fronts mean one thing and that is very good sailfishing and that is exactly what we have had. We have averaged 5 to 6 sailfish per trip and the sailfishing has been very consistent with us catch...

The cold fronts we’ve been experiencing have kicked the kingfishing into high gear. The first outstanding run of kingfish has been long awaited and very welcome. The fish are averaging 8 – 30 pounds with some even larger. Mixed in with the kings have been large bonito and some blackfin tuna. Working offshore a bit deeper and the sailfish have been cooperating nicely along with some mahi-mahi. Meanwhile on the inshore scene, tarpon fishing remains hot. As of my last trip, there has...

On my last report I mentioned that our fishing season was here and underway. Well if my last few trips are any indication we are headed for another great winter. One of the pro’s of living and fishing in the south Florida region is the diversity of the fishing waters, in fact, very few other locations in the world can offer the variety and diversity of fishing waters that we have...

Report Date: April 22, 2010     What a great couple of weeks of fishing. I have fished 20 days already this month and it is only April 22nd. I have had a blast as this is one of my favorite months to fish due to the variety. The one thing I have to say about April so far has been the weather. For the most part we have had a very windy April and the seas can get a bit rough, but my customers hung in there and we had some quality days. The past few days the ocean has been calm an...

Spring time action is in full swing. It's almost like which style of fishing should I do first. Offshore for sails, kings, dolphin, blackfins, or inshore for tarpon. Should I fish the Inlets or in the Bay for the tarpon? The easiest decision to cover both is an afternoon/evening trip. The advantages are that you don't have to get up at oh dark thirty to get everything together and get out on the water at first light. You can take your time getting everything in order and still have plent...

About 10 days ago we did a fun trip with the usual members, Devon, Amy, “Uncle” Al, and I. We were meat fishing so we met up at 10 AM and tossed the dock lines. Wreck fishing was about all that Amy wanted to do, no Sailfish, Mackerel, or anything of that nature. Of course, the first stop was for live bait.     We proceeded out to the first wreck site. Drifting live shrimp pegged on a jig, we had a few bites but most all ended in a cut off. Those dreaded Caribbean Spotted Mack...

The tarpon action has been outstanding! That's the best way to describe it. Add in the fact that the shrimp have finally been making the runs like they should and that means the tarpon action is even better. Each time the rod bends over severely from a tarpon strike, you could be fighting a fish that weighs in anywhere from 30 - 100 pounds. Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 10.21.09

Great Snook, tarpon, Redfish, Permit Fishing in South Florida Report Date: October 19, 2009   You can tell Fall is here! As I'm writing this report the wind is blowing 15 to 20 out of the west northwest and the temperature has dropped 10 degrees from what it had been. A cold front as everybody knows by now came through South Florida early this morning and moved into the Florida Straits and past the Bahamas. A welcomed change from the very hot temperatures we had been experiencing. Y...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 10.21.09

Finally!! We get a break from the HOT weather. Before the cold front passed through, the 100 - 200 foot zone was the place to get plenty of action with kingfish, AJ's, and small sharks. The surface action for these fish was poor at best. All the bites were on either the mid-depth baits or the bottom baits. Fishing the deeper wrecks has been to say the least an adventure. We've seen plenty of action with either sharks or AJ's. Getting them to the surface is another story. Now that the cold...

Monday, October 19, 2009 Darkside... Short & Sweet! One of my good customers, Jon, called me early in the week and said he needed a mental health day. This means he wanted to go fishing by himself with no clients to entertain. He asked if I was available in 2 days, I was, so we reserved the date. He wanted another shot at some Swordfish because his freezer was empty. The last 2 times he came down for the same purpose, we failed to fill his grocery cart. He told me he was packing one of...

Report Date: October 12, 2009 The past two weeks have been non-stop fishing. We have been doing a variety of trips from fishing the edge, fishing the wrecks, day time and night time swordfishing as well as dolphin fishing in the Gulfstream. We have had some great trips with lots of action, but also have had some very slow trips. The slow trips have mostly been on the swordfish trips. We did 3 daytime sword trips and caught a fish on one of those trips. The night trips have been a little bit...

Sunday, October 11, 2009 Night and Day! It’s been a while since my last report. We had an unusual collapse to the Cubera Snapper season. For some reason they got lockjaw in September and we finally gave up fishing for them around the middle of the month. I had one remaining trip on October 3rd with our return customer, Seth. He called a week before the trip to check in. I explained what was happening out there and suggested we do a trip on the “Darkside” for Swordfish ins...

If you're looking for plenty of action, it's been hard to beat the 100 - 200 foot depth range all along the South Florida coast. Yes, there has been a good improvement in offshore dolphin fishing, however, its still been inconsistent. In the meantime, the action in the above mentioned area has been steady and consistent. Put out your spread of baits at various depths and it won't be long before the action begins. Fabio Nick needed a day off from his busy work schedule. A half day trip was...

It's time for another update, so let's get right to it. We'll start with dolphin (mahi-mahi) fishing. As everyone in this area knows, we've had a very poor season since the beginning of June. So bad that it's just not been worth even running out to look with the hopes that you might find a few dolphin. With that said, there is a bit of encouraging news. Surface water temperatures in the ocean have been between 88 - 91 degrees. In Biscayne Bay it's been even higher. With the temperatures this high, it calls for a change in technique to have a reasonable chance at a successful trip.  In the ocean, fishing your baits deeper will improve your chances. In the Bay, fishing early and at night will help combat the high temperatures.  Dolphin fishing has improve slightly. By this I mean that you will have to search long and hard to cat...

Many times during a trip we are getting hit as the baits are being deployed and this happens numerous times during each trip. Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 10.01.08

It's been a while since my last report. Between the Tropical Storms, Hurricanes, the economy, back to school, etc., there have not seemed to be to many people interested in fishing. This is quite a shame as the fishing has been quite good. Lets talk about what you've been missing. This is the time of year when the dolphin typically start their migration back south from cooling northern waters to warmer southern waters. Add in all the easterly winds and swells we've been having and the combinat...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 09.08.08

We are now having a very busy hurricane season. The major networks seem to want to cover the storms starting when they are thousands of miles away. They show seven day forecasts that turn out to be just that, forecasts. Even the three day forecasts turn out to change in a day or two. There is just to much information being passed along to the general public and in reality, all it is doing is scaring a whole lot of people and getting the rest all worked up. Yes we need information, however, unl...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.18.08

Here's a quick run down on what's been happening this week aboard Knot Nancy. Shorty Francios, Richard Lavalliere, and Polius "George" Salnave combined to catch 4 kingfish, 3 bonito, 1 mutton snapper, and 1 remora on a half day trip. The fish were caught in the Anchorage Area in the 105 - 115 foot range using live pilchards and herring. Harold Masel, his son, John, and John's son Ethan combined to catch 5 kingfish and 1 out of 3 amberjack (40#'s). Once again the kingfish were caught...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.04.08

It's summertime and that means fish early or late and watch for the afternoon thunderstorms. It's also the time of year when the downrigger and bottom rod will out produce the flatlines on most trips. The majority of action will be for kingfish, bonito, and AJ's with a few sailfish, mutton snapper, and blackfin tuna. Offshore, the dolphin have made a return after mostly being absent for several days after the full moon. Inshore the tarpon have gone into their summertime mode. The means fishing...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 07.07.08

The last part of June and the beginning of July has seen excellent fishing both offshore and inshore. If you fish the waters in the 100 - 250 foot range its been bonito, kingfish, amberjack, and an occasional blackfin tuna or sailfish. Move further out in the 800 - 1000 foot range and the dolphin fishing has been very rewarding. The key to finding the dolphin in our area has been to find birds, both terns and frigates. The schools have been fast moving and going south for the most part. Inshor...

The good news is that legal size dolphin have finally shown up in good numbers in our area. We've been waiting and not so patiently for the dolphin run to begin. Be prepared to burn some fuel in your search. The best action has been in the 13 - 25 mile out range in scattered weed, under birds, around floating debris if you're lucky enough to find any, or by just blind trolling. Meanwhile, back in closer, it's been a mixed bag of bonito, kingfish, some blackfin tuna, and sailfish. We're in the...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 06.09.08

The action offshore for sailfish, kingfish, bonito, blackfin tuna, and an occasional dolphin remains good. Some days require patience and a bit of searching, however, it's worth the wait to get the action going. Meanwhile, inshore for tarpon, the action has been very consistent. Most of the time you have to wait them out till dusk and after dark, but once the action starts, it's almost every drift there after. Jerry Scala and his sons Nick and Jack fished an afternoon/evening combo trip. With...

Since my last report, it's been nothing but WOW fishing. Offshore the sailfish, kingfish, and bonito have kept many anglers busy. Throw in an excellent run of blackfin tuna just for good measure and the offshore angler could hardly ask for anything better. Move back inshore and the tarpon fishing has been outstanding with many many fish over the 100 pound mark. Gary Benivegna, his son, Matthew, and long time friend Rick Kapouch had a day they will long remember. We loaded the livewell with pil...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 05.15.08

Sailfish, kingfish, a few dolphin, bonito, and plenty of tarpon have given us steady action. The weather has run the gamut from no wind to as high as 19 knots. North current and blue water accounts for the good offshore action. The windy conditions stirred the water just enough so that the tarpon dropped their guard a little and are feeding pretty good both during the daylight hours and after dark. Lindsay Glazer and her friends Matt Rosen and Fernando Amuchastegy picked one of the more windy...

Since my last report, we've seen the north current off Miami continue to be strong and then die off to little or no current. While we had to good north current, the fishing was very good to outstanding. When the current died, the action has been had to come by and persistence has paid off with getting the fish to strike. Sailfish are available to be caught almost everyday. Finding them on no current days amounts to covering plenty of ground and getting lucky. Cobia are making their appearance...

Spring is in the air. Sailfishing continues to be outstanding in the 100 - 130 foot range. Kingfish are starting to make their appearance after a very disappointing winter and are being found in 100 - 115 feet. Dolphin are coming through in the 200 - 400 foot range. Finally the blackfin tuna in various sizes have made a showing in depths of 140 - 400 feet. As for tarpon, they are in an inconsistent mode as I write this report. One evening they are easy to find and the next they are hiding. Man...

In fact, a customer caught a jack crevalle and a spanish mackerel a couple days ago in St. Augustine, which is a sure sign fish are moving north. EXCELLENT sailfishing is the only way to describe it. On some days it's been off the wall. We've had a strong north current with blue water. The sails are being caught all along the South Florida coast mainly in the 90 - 110 foot range. The typical weather patter over the last few days has been light wind in the morning and south wind of 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon. That's when the sails start chomping. The dolphin are being found along weedlines, under birds, and on the blue side of a blue/green color change. Sailfish are being caught on an almost daily basis. The fish have been averaging 30 - 60 pounds with some a bit larger. We have been averaging 5 - 6 fish per trip. Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 01.22.08

The winter weather has definitely arrived in South Florida. A cold front comes through, we have windy weather, the seas build, then they subside and the wind dies off, we have a day or two of calm weather and then the cycle begins again. This weather pattern brings good sailfishing offshore. Throw in some kingfish action along with a few dolphin (mahi-mahi) and that makes for some good fishing action. Move inshore and the shrimp get stirred up by the wind and cooler temperatures. This in turn...

Good news for all tarpon fans. The winter tarpon season has started both at the Inlets and in the Bay. The cold front that just passed through has the shrimp moving and the tarpon feeding on them. Mark Rubert and his friend Terry were the first anglers aboard Knot Nancy to welcome in the tarpon.
