Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 05.15.13

Summer brings several things that improve the fishing in the central lagoon area, some of which include stable weather, light winds and increased variety and numbers of baitfish. The light winds open new territory to small boat anglers (i.e. the ocean). This allows anglers a chance to pursue species that are out of their reach the rest of the year, as well as having better conditions to fish the inshore waters. Being able to get outside the inlet is going to be more im...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 04.23.13

It looks like the rainy season has set in on the Treasure Coast.  We have had lots of showers around the area lately and the plants are turning green again.  Look for chances of afternoon rains now and watch the weather out on the water.  We dodged a lot of rain clouds recently, but haven't gotten too wet yet.  The winds are still blowing most days and that can affect your fishing more than wet weather.  We have had lots of good fishing in spite of conditions....

Near shore Atlantic – The waters from the beach on out a few miles can be very productive in March if the winds allow boaters and surf fishermen the opportunity to fish them. Surf fishermen target pompano, bluefish and mackerel as they begin their northern migration. Boaters can do the same and keep an eye out for cruising cobia and large schools of double digit Jack Crevalle. Sharks, Bonita and king mackerel can also join the beach party in late march. Take advantage...

Fins Fishing report Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Port Saint Lucie, Florida Last weekend was awesome fishing! Awesome for sure! The radio chatter was all about dolphin with reports of 3-4 per boat, but they had to fish through all the sail fish. Bottom fishing is the best in years , Ft. Inshore: It's obvious that the rainy season has arrived on the Treasure Coast.  Chances of afternoon rains and thunderstorms each day will determine if you want to venture on the water or not.  Early mornings are generally the best time to get out fishing before the wetness moves in.  Keep an eye peeled for lightning and keep safe out there. I had a wonderful day on the river this past week.  Taking my son-in-law and my granddaughter, Chloe, out on the river...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 05.24.12

Summer has arrived and you can bet on hot afternoons and lots of great fishing action around the Treasure Coast during June.  The mornings will be calm and it is certainly to your benefit to get out early to beat the afternoon heat.  Being on the water at first light is worth the effort to watch the sun rise.  Expect a chance of afternoon thunderstorms each day…we could sure use some rain around the area this year!  It’s a fantastic month to fish. Inshor...

INSHORE - Look for the summer patterns to get in full swing and this means that you will need to fish early in the morning and just before dark. There should be some big trout, redfish and catch and release snook around since we didn't have much winter weather. Try the flats around the Moorings for all three fish and also keep and eye out for a tarpon or two. Live baits like a pilchard, mullet or a pigfish will be hard to beat. If you like artificial bait then you will need to try a Zar...

May 16, 2012 INSHORE: The winds are calming down, but the rainy season began this week bringing much needed water to the Treasure Coast.  I took a few days off to sneak off to WV and surprise my mother for Mother's Day and my little brother for his 50th birthday.  There has been a variety of fish out on the flats recently.  Wayne and Dick caught a number of species including redfish, trout and even a bonnethead shark. Inshore: Another blustery week along the Treasure Coast had anglers searching for ways to get out fishing and not get blown away!  We found a number of areas to fish this week to get out of the worst of the winds.  It's been a challenge, but we have caught fish each day out there. As March blows out of the area, you can plan on some windy days ahead in April. The transition into the summer pattern is well under way and soon the winds will die down and you can enjoy those calm days of summer once again. Expect the fishing to be especially good this April as the water temperatures have remained warmer this year and the fish have been active all winter. As the river fills with bait schools, you can bet the fish are hungry and will be feeding heavily. Have fun! Redfi...

It might dictate where and when you can get on the water, but at least we aren't cutting holes in the ice to fish! INSHORE - Look for the fishing to be good if the weather stays nice. The snook bite should be good at places like the Ft. Pierce Inlet and around the local bridges. Try using a live baits such as a pinfish, pigfish, mullet or a select shrimp. You can also troll bug plugs in the Ft. Pierce Inlet and around the bridges. The trout and redfish bite should also remain good around the deeper edges of the flats and around the mangroves. Try a live shrimp as your first choice then soft plastic bait...

Inshore: February Fishing Forecast While winter is still around the Treasure Coast and weekly cold fronts will continue to bring cool nights and lots of windy days to the area, fishing will still be good out on the water.   We began our day on one of my secret spots out in the deep water where less traffic makes for better fishing. In no time at all a nice gag gouper was in the box and was shortly followed by several amberjack and two more gags up to 36 lbs. That great action was topped off with a mystery bit that turned into a 22 lb cobia; man, what a day this was turning out to be. My 1st mate and I were feeling prety good about or day and not expecting much on the troll. Low and beho...

Inshore:     Just as October proved to be a windy month, you can expect that November will also continue on that same windy note. We are in the middle of our winter transition and you can also count on cooler temperatures that will start the thermometer sliding when it comes to the water temps as well. The days will remain nice and warm, but the nights will become cooler this month. It’s time to change your fishing tactics out on the water.   Trout will continue to be...

October 24, 2011       Inshore:     Windy conditions prevailed again this week around the Treasure Coast. We were able to get out fishing, but the winds made it challenging for us. Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 10.17.11

October 17, 2011     Inshore:   The usual October winds continue to make it challenging to fish many of the favorite areas on the river. All the recent rain has really dirtied up the river and definitely affected the bite. As the water clears back up, the fishing will improve as well.   Todd and Lauren were back again this year. This year, they also came down to get married. Congratulations to you both! We had a slow bite with the conditions, but caught fish a...

I am very happy to report that it looks like the Central Indian River Lagoon Area is having a “Normal” fall season for the first time in about five years. As of mid-October we have already seen some morning temperatures in the mid-sixties and water temps throughout the lagoon are in the upper 70’s. Water temperatures are dropping back into the optimum range for most of the resident and migratory species and air temps begin to cool into the preferred range for anglers as well. Inshore:     The fall mullet run is in full swing around the Treasure Coast this month. September is always an exciting month to fish along the Treasure Coast. Anglers eagerly await the arrival of the annual fall mullet run. The beaches and rivers will be filled with mullet and you can find lots of predators following the bait this month. Look for tarpon, snook, jacks, bluefish and many other species feeding on the mullet this month. Top water and suspending lures work fantastic in September. Try a DOA Baitbuster or Big Fish lure while fishing around the large schools of mullet....

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 08.23.11

I don’t know how to react to this past summer season. The thing that stands out for me in hindsight is the lack of a consistent near-shore bite, especially in the case of king mackerel. The lack of favorable small boat friendly sea conditions can take some of the blame, but commercial and recreational anglers I’ve talked to from the Keys to North Carolina have made the same observation. Let’s hope it is a cycle and it will correct itself by next summer. On the other hand, the inshore fishin...

The fishing in the Sebastian area in August can be some of the best of the year. The catch and release snook and redfish fishing at Sebastian Inlet are at their best in August. The crowds are light since the snook season is still closed until September 1st. We must be diligently careful when handling these large game-fish at boat side. Have the camera ready so as to only have the fish out of the water for a few seconds, and if you don’t want a picture, release them without taking them from th...

It has been a long hot summer for the central Indian River Lagoon area this year. Due to an abundance of calm, clear days and very little rain this summer, water temperatures reached the low 90’s in the lagoon on a daily basis. The fishing in the Sebastian area in the mid-summer can be some of the best of the year. In past years, August has seen large increases of redfish and trout on the flats of the central lagoon. Hopefully this will be the case this year, because so far this year has been very lack-luster in the case of inshore fishing in the region. The freeze and resulting fish kill back in January has to be somewhat to blame. Remember, IF snook season opens on the 1st of September the limit will be one fish be...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 12.21.09

December 20, 2009 Typical winter weather patterns allowed for a few days to fish and the rest of the week was windy, wet and wild. Lots of rain the past couple of days have made it challenging for anglers to try and get out. Looks like the rain might end by Saturday, but we will just wait and see how it turns out. There will be lots of fresh water pouring into the river for the next several days. You can bet the water is pretty dirty for now as well. Not too much to report this week on the...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 12.17.09

THE CENTRAL INDIAN RIVER LAGOON AND SEBASTIAN INLET - EARLY WINTER FORCAST January is usually the heart of the winter fishing season in East Central Florida. Water temperatures will be in the 60’s if all is normal, with cold snaps driving them as low as the upper 40’s and occasional warm spells lifting them into the upper 70’s. The changing temps will move the fish around more than at other times of the year, but by using a bit of common sense you can find some excellent...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 12.11.09

We fished a half day on Thursday in the Dusky to the North in about 120' to 150' . We pulled the hook on couple of singles( sailfish ) . We did boat a nice wahoo about 40 # and a 20# dolphin.  Lots of bait around the weeds.  There is a good body of sailfish to the North so this front should push them down to our area soon. Call if you would like to book a trip. Capt. Dave Barker Commitment Sportfishing  772-220-0520   fishcommitment@yahoo.com  ...

I must say it has been a great year for fishing all along the Treasure Coast. Both inshore and offshore has provided anglers with many great fishing adventures. Hopefully, this winter will be milder and the fishing great for everyone. December brings on the winter months and changes fishing tactics on the river. The water temperatures continue to...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 11.17.09

THE CENTRAL INDIAN RIVER DECEMBER 2009 I can only hope that by the time you find yourself reading this article, the weather in central Florida is that of early winter rather than the unending summer we have been experiencing so far this year. Water temperatures in the Indian River Lagoon are still over 80 and I’m writing this in mid-November. Due to the fact that the weather is going to play such a large part in this month’s fishing forecast I’m going to keep it brief and u...

Atlantic Ocean Report:I fished a couple of guys on 5/1/09 for a half day trip. We caught 3 doilphin from 15 to 20 # and pulled the hook on another one about the same size. We also had a shot at a sailfish. On 2/5/09 I fished a Cabo and caught 7 dolphin from 18 to 30#. We also had a Mako free jump just outside of our spread.
