Great Trip, Horrible Ending
Off to my favorite wreck yesterday. I knew the Ocean was going to pick up as the day went on. Boy did it, but first to the fish. We had a great day on the Seabass. Too many double headers to count. Ended up with 30 nice ones in the box. After 10:30 the bite died, or so I thought. Switching over to mackrel for bait re-ignited the Seabass bite. Thanks Mikey! With the forecast of increasing winds, figured the Fluke bite would be off so went wreck fishing instead. Loaded with clam, fully expected to find a snag and anchor up. Things did not go as planned as had hard time finding a good concentration of fish. So instead we drifted and jigged Ava's. The result, LARGE SEABASS. Many were over 15 inches with the largest around 18 inches. Oh yeh, and a nice 24" fluke was in the mix.

We had a nice pick of fish in the cooler yesterday. Started out on a wreck and put some really nice seabass in the box and a ling. After the bite slowed (10 AM... set you watch by it) we switched our pursuits to fluke. Big disappointment of a day yesterday. Expecting the wrecks to be loaded given the rest bit they were given. Unfortunately, there has been a massive invasion of Spiny Dogfish that has shut everything down. We hit wrecks at 3, 8, 11, and 14 miles from the beach and everyone was loaed with Dogs. We had packs following hooked Dogs to the surface. I am not sure what this means for the rest of the season. Maybe our next trip we will look for Cod on some of the 25+ mile wrecks.

We had another very good day wreck fishing today. Not to mention is was just a beautiful and fun day to be on the water in October. The catching was red-hot, though the fish on average were a bit smaller than Thursday. Still we managed 46 in the box with a mix of Seabass, Porgies, and Triggers.

Man, it was a rough one Thursday on the Ocean. A howling NW wind created a sharp 4' shop with some nice 6 footers thrown in. Decided to hit the wrecks anyway. Foresaking anchoring for drifting we did quite well clamming and then jigging Seabass. 2 Guys totaled 10 nice Seabass in the box along with a couple dozen shorts and 10 Fluke including a heart breaker of over 20 inches. It was a beautiful day on the Ocean yesterday. However, the fishing was tough. I gather the swell from Danielle had things just a bit off. And despite the swell, most of the fish we caught were on a power drift. Total in the box for the day 2 Fluke, 1 Seabass and 1 Croaker. Not great.

We had a great trip on Saturday. Three guys were able to hook a dozen keepers with 5 fish over 20 inches. Even the "shorts" were very nice fish with most over 17 inches and all very fat. The current Ocean conditions are downright treacherous. When the party boats stay in the inlet, you know it is rough. The NE wind is going to be persistent over the weekend. Ocean will not be doable until at least Sunday, maybe later.
On the bay front, the Fluke are still abundant and small. We got 25 today in terrible conditions. Incoming is still the better choice.

did not have high expectations for yesterday's trip so I was not disappointed. The residual Ocean swell had the fish finicky at best. All told we managed about 15 Fluke and 12 Seabass but only 3 barely keeper Seabass in the mix and not a single keeper Fluke. As soon as water settles from the stir I believe the Fluke fishing will bounce right back.

Only a few days ago I was very upbeat about the overall catching. Unfortunately, that optimism has not been met with the same reality. The combination of the SE Swell from Colin, Persistent Southerlies, and the residual upwelled waters, have really put the kabosh over the weekend on the catching. Some areas had temp swings as much as 18 degrees from the beginning to the end of the week. Hopefully we will get a quick settle, and the fish will start to bite again. Back at it in the AM!

Didn't have a charter yesterday so my wife and I decided to go catch some Flounder. We fished the entire incoming tide and picked about 75 fish with 4 being of keeper size. Just when I think the bite can't get any better, it does. No secrets here, just wait for the incoming water as the cooling from the Ocean puts the Fluke on the feed. For those of you who just like a tight line, no matter what is on the other end, well the Bay Fluking is off the hook. For the most part (maybe 25 to 1) these are not keeper fish. However, they are quite plentiful. Yesterday's trip had a youngster on board, so I decided to start with a quick couple of drifts in the Bay. Well he catches 6 Fluke, before we even really start our day. Great Job Matt!

We fished with Lou and his friends from PA yesterday. We left the dock at 6:30 am and started out fluking to the south of our inlet.
Our first stop was in 32 feet we made several drifts on a lump there and we only caught skates. We moved up to the reef site and drifted there and caught 2 shorts and one keeper. We did not see much going on around us either. I checked on the cell phone with a few guys fishing and the reports were about the same. Not many fluke bites and few keepers...

Every once in a while the Fishing Gods smile upon you. Yesterday, on what was otherwise a slow day, we were able to boat back to back matching 26.5 inch Fluke on the same Drift!
Ocean is quite warm now (70+) so I expect the bite to just get better from here on out.

Ran our second shark trip of the year yesterday. Unfortunately, the results were the same as the first trip. Bluefish everywhere. Sharking very slow. Water temps were good this time (67) and there was plenty of bait in the water. Sand Eels were showing thick at 100 ft. Not sure why no sharks. There were a lot of boats in the area (Fingers) so I am sure that did not help. Based on radio chatter nary of shark was caught. So we filled our day pulling in one giant Bluefish after another.

Our run to the Sharking grounds Tuesday was not quite as nice as the weatherman had predicted and we arrived with a fast drift and big chop. Water was quite cool (61.9) but chatter on the radio had all areas with the same problem. Set up on the drift but nothing but big Bluefish all day long. Based on the boats reporting on channel "68" the total catch for the day was a single Blue Shark, a 61 lb. Mako, and a 47 inch Bluefin.

We bypassed the Bay Fluke kick-off yesterday for the sake of some Seabass action on the wrecks. The bite was good and the keeper ratio much improved from the previous trip. It's only going to get better from here. I was also quite surprised on the number of Fluke we did catch yesterday in the Ocean around the wrecks. I think the warm water burst we are having (60 F yesterday) is spurring an early (very) Ocean Fluke bite. Will be back at it tomorrow on the wrecks and maybe even try a few drifts...

The Ocean Fluke bite seems to be better than I expected it to be so early in the season. We started out yesterday once again with the focus on Seabass. However, this time the same wrecks that produced 2 days prior were empty. We ended up catching more Fluke than bass including this beauty of 25.5 inches for Mate Gus!

Sea Bassing is on the upswing on the nearshore wrecks. Nearly every stop yesterday produced action. Most fish are still shorts, but is should not be long until we get some nice humpbacks in shore also.
It seems as if the SE swell caused by the low pressure system off of the Carolinas has pushed warm water to the beach. Yesterday, I was getting Ocean readings as high as 60 F. That is quite a jump from the 43 F a couple of weeks ago.

Had one of our Forum Members "Shark Bait" out for a LONG day of fishing yeterday. Headed up to Ortely Beach as did about a thousand other boats. Some Very big fish were being caught but it was dang near impossible to set on the troll with so many boats.
A switch to a wreck also produced nothing. However, the old reliable Bluefish in front of the inlet on the outgoing tide, saved us on an otherwise tough day.

The Ocean water temps have recovered just a bit over the last couple of days but is still quite cold (49 yesterday). The Bluefish seem to have liked the slight uptick in warmth as they were ravenous yesterday. The mouth of the Inlet (east side) and along the beach was bonkers. Birds pointed the direction.

Started off the day yesterday intent on finding some large Bass. Trolling between the "Bathing Beach" and "Ferris Wheel" produced abolutely nothing. Did mark tons of bait deep, probably not bunker. You know things are tough when you get an 0 for 5 (captains talking on channel 68 getting skunked).

Spent the afternoon yesterday trolling between the Coast Guard Station and the Ferris Wheel. We were able to tie into 6 Large Bluefish. We marked quite a bit of bait, but not a single Bass was to be had. Due to extremely high winds, we hugged tight to the beach the entire time and even headed in a bit earlier (before dark) than usual. I think as soon as the next few days of high winds pass we are going to be in for some awesome fishing.

Based on second and third hand information the Winter Flounder are not cooperating for those few who are trying to catch them.
I did however, overhear a conversation of a fella complaining that he only caught 1 Winter Flounder but caught 13 Bluefish. This is the first I heard of any Blues being caught in the Bay proper so far this year. A bit early, but we should see a big push in the next 2 weeks.

Fluke Regulations have been made final. The season will run from 5/29 through 9/6. You will be able to keep 6 fish per person at 18 inches or over. For Seabass, the decision has not yet been made but a proposal on the table is for the season to run from 5/22 - 9/12 with a 12.5 inch minimum and a 25 fish per person bag limit. Blues Return
The hooking yesterday was not nearly as good as recent trips.
Still, the bright side was that Bluefish returned. If you have been reading these reports, you know that recently I speculated that the Bass season may be coming to an early end.
The return of the Blues has me more confident that we still have a few weeks left til we put the boats in dry dock.

Yesterday produced another solid day of jigging for Stipers. Early on, it was a complete mad-dog bite, which slowed to a trickle as the day wore on. We were greeted yesterday with HEAVY seas, the remnants of the recent storm. Still, the fishing was ON. We started out in 52 ft. of water straight out the inlet, stopping on the bird play. Good Catching. Great Weather.
Just an absolutely perfect day on the Ocean yesterday. Very little wind and waves about 1 ft. Catching was decent, but not great. I think it was too nice. Bluefish and Stripers are to be had inshore.... just look for the bait pods and jig (sand eels) or troll with the usual get ups. All are producing.
Sadly, the Bluefin which were so abundant just 2 days ago only showed a few times yesterday. But they are still out there.
