Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 08.07.12

We fished on 8-4-12 with Jeff and Carol Vogel, Steve Sr ,Cheryl, and their daughter Sam and son Steve Jr. We decided to run off a little in search of bluefish. We arrived at the spot and searched around looking for a large body of fish to Jig , all we saw were scattered fish on the fishfinder and decided to troll. Kenny set the first rod out and before he could get the second rod in we had our first bite. To our surprise it was a BONITO not a bluefish. We fished this area for the next three...

We fished today 7/17/12 with Dean Groff , His 14 yr old son Ethan ,Nephew Ryan, Brian, Rob and Ed. We left the dock at 3:30 am and headed to the Hot Dog .We had 6 ready anglers that have never caught a tuna before on board. When we arrived there was already 20 boats anchored up. We moved to our spot and marked some bait and picked our spot to set up. The anchoring conditions were difficult very little tide against wind. We finally settled in on the anchor and did get our first bite, how...

We had a Bluefin tuna trip scheduled for this date With Jack, , Mark , John C , John S and nephew Jason. With the early canyon bite this year we converted from a mud hole trip to a canyon troll trip. We left at midnight and took the 14 knot ride to the edge where we had been told of a bite the previous day . We arrived at first light when we got there we found 61 degree water, green and dirty . It was obvious what direction the water moved and we went for 15 miles until we found the edge th...

We fished with Tom Pennimpede, His Wife Stacy, Daughter Audrey, Son Tommy and his Father Tony. We left the slip after 10 AM and started trolling just before 11 am. Our first bite came on a green spoon within 10 minutes of fishing just as we got our 3rd line set. Our next bite came pretty quick on a white spoon. Audrey and Tommy caught the first 2 fish. From this point, we decided to try jigging and the bites came on storm shads and metal. The kids wanted to release fish. We released 12 and...

We fished with Mike, John and Jeff on an overnight trip to the Spencer we left the dock a little later today 10:00 am knowing the bite has been just at dark. We trolled from the Lindy where there had been a few troll bites and were greeted with a spectacular porpoise show along the way . We did get a few small bites and pulled off two fish. We fished this past weekend with Dave Tompkins and friends , Jim , Mark , Fitzie, Reds and First timer Donny. We have fished with these guys for the past 15 years great bunch we always have a good time with them. We left the dock at 10:00 am and headed off to the Carteret there was a 5Â’ swell from the east which kept our speed to 20 knots the ride was good at that speed. The swell was caused by a large disturbance directly off our coast which was almost upgraded to a tropical storm , unrelate...

Great Trip, Horrible Ending         Off to my favorite wreck yesterday. I knew the Ocean was going to pick up as the day went on. Boy did it, but first to the fish. We had a great day on the Seabass. Too many double headers to count. Ended up with 30 nice ones in the box. After 10:30 the bite died, or so I thought. Switching over to mackrel for bait re-ignited the Seabass bite. Thanks Mikey! Ran out of Mackerel so switched to Fluke. Immediately start banging them....

With the forecast of increasing winds, figured the Fluke bite would be off so went wreck fishing instead. Loaded with clam, fully expected to find a snag and anchor up. Things did not go as planned as had hard time finding a good concentration of fish. So instead we drifted and jigged Ava's. The result, LARGE SEABASS. Many were over 15 inches with the largest around 18 inches. Oh yeh, and a nice 24" fluke was in the mix.     First Catch Fishing www.firstcatchfishing.com...

We had a nice pick of fish in the cooler yesterday. Started out on a wreck and put some really nice seabass in the box and a ling. After the bite slowed (10 AM... set you watch by it) we switched our pursuits to fluke. Tried a few spots one the way back toward the beach but it was not until we hit the beach front did we start to get some fish. And we hit them pretty good.     Hard south west wind had a fast drift happening. Used 10 oz. to hold bottom in under 40 feet. Still we...

The winter boat work is done! We decided to get a crew together and explore a few offshore wrecks to see what we could find. We had Tye, Brett, Uncle Butch, and Tom on board, we left the dock at 6:30 am it was 29 degrees a clear morning. Big disappointment of a day yesterday. Expecting the wrecks to be loaded given the rest bit they were given. Unfortunately, there has been a massive invasion of Spiny Dogfish that has shut everything down. We hit wrecks at 3, 8, 11, and 14 miles from the beach and everyone was loaed with Dogs. We had packs following hooked Dogs to the surface. I am not sure what this means for the rest of the season. Maybe our next trip we will look for Cod on some of the 25+ mile wrecks.     B...

was a beautiful day yesterday to be on the water. Warm temps, sunny skies, and light winds, you just couldn't get any better for late October. Boaters responded by the hundreds as the Ocean was more crowded than a fine summer day. The "fleet" was centered around the Bathing Beach looking for those elusive Striped Bass. While it was fine fishing, the catching was just not that good. There were some bass caught to be sure, but the Bluefish outnumbered the Bass by a wide margin. If head...

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 09.24.10

It has been a tough go on the Ocean as of late. Either we have some type of tropical system off the coast or enough of our own wind kicking up to have made Ocean fishing a challenge.     Yesterday we were met with a straight in your face 4ft chop. So we decided to hit the Tires rather than making a longer run off the beach. Despite the roughness, we had a pretty steady pick of fish but the Seabass were small and the Fluke... well you know. Man, it was a rough one Thursday on the Ocean. A howling NW wind created a sharp 4' shop with some nice 6 footers thrown in. Decided to hit the wrecks anyway. Foresaking anchoring for drifting we did quite well clamming and then jigging Seabass. 2 Guys totaled 10 nice Seabass in the box along with a couple dozen shorts and 10 Fluke including a heart breaker of over 20 inches. By far the nicer fish came on the jig, including a beauty of a Seabass about 5 lbs.     If you have nev...

It was a beautiful day on the Ocean yesterday. However, the fishing was tough. I gather the swell from Danielle had things just a bit off. And despite the swell, most of the fish we caught were on a power drift. Total in the box for the day 2 Fluke, 1 Seabass and 1 Croaker. Not great.     If Fluke are your thing, you better get out in the next couple of days. The forecast looks ominous later this week with Tropical Storm conditiions expected. Looks like another great weekend ahead for anglers and beach goers alike. The weather will be great and there are fish to be had. With just a few days left in our 2010 Fluke season most anglers will be focusing on putting a few fillets in the box.     My suggestion is the same as last week. Do not waste your gas venturing far from the Inlet to look for Fluke. They are close.... trust me. In fact, yesterday's bite was primarily in the Inlet proper. Most likely that was because t...

We had a great trip on Saturday. Three guys were able to hook a dozen keepers with 5 fish over 20 inches. Even the "shorts" were very nice fish with most over 17 inches and all very fat. The Fluke were very aggressive in their feeding. Sometimes, you could swear it was a Bluefish hitting they way they were attacking the baits and running off with it.     From here on it should be guns a blazing. Only a few days ago I was very upbeat about the overall catching. Unfortunately, that optimism has not been met with the same reality. The combination of the SE Swell from Colin, Persistent Southerlies, and the residual upwelled waters, have really put the kabosh over the weekend on the catching. For those of you who just like a tight line, no matter what is on the other end, well the Bay Fluking is off the hook. For the most part (maybe 25 to 1) these are not keeper fish. However, they are quite plentiful. Yesterday's trip had a youngster on board, so I decided to start with a quick couple of drifts in the Bay. Well he catches 6 Fluke, before we even really start our day. Great Job Matt!     On the Ocean side of things, the persistent south winds have done their upwell...

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 06.25.10

We fished with Lou and his friends from PA yesterday. We left the dock at 6:30 am and started out fluking to the south of our inlet.   Our first stop was in 32 feet we made several drifts on a lump there and we only caught skates. We moved up to the reef site and drifted there and caught 2 shorts and one keeper. We did not see much going on around us either. I checked on the cell phone with a few guys fishing and the reports were about the same. Not many fluke bites and few keepers...

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 06.21.10

Ran our second shark trip of the year yesterday. Unfortunately, the results were the same as the first trip. Bluefish everywhere. Sharking very slow. Water temps were good this time (67) and there was plenty of bait in the water. Sand Eels were showing thick at 100 ft. Not sure why no sharks. There were a lot of boats in the area (Fingers) so I am sure that did not help. Based on radio chatter nary of shark was caught. So we filled our day pulling in one giant Bluefish after another.  ...

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 06.11.10

Our run to the Sharking grounds Tuesday was not quite as nice as the weatherman had predicted and we arrived with a fast drift and big chop. Water was quite cool (61.9) but chatter on the radio had all areas with the same problem. Set up on the drift but nothing but big Bluefish all day long. Based on the boats reporting on channel "68" the total catch for the day was a single Blue Shark, a 61 lb. Mako, and a 47 inch Bluefin.     Unfortunately, our Sharking day was cu...

called off our first Shark trip of the year for today. Just a tad too windy for me to my liking to be running 30 miles out in this slop. Tuesday looks great, so we are going to give it a whirl then. Of course, will post any pics if we get Mr. Mako.     Fishing is just a tad off at the moment. That is not to say you can not catch fish, but there are some abnormal water temperature differences in the inshore water that is playing havoc with the catching. Yesterday had temps of up...

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 06.01.10

We bypassed the Bay Fluke kick-off yesterday for the sake of some Seabass action on the wrecks. The bite was good and the keeper ratio much improved from the previous trip. It's only going to get better from here. I was also quite surprised on the number of Fluke we did catch yesterday in the Ocean around the wrecks. I think the warm water burst we are having (60 F yesterday) is spurring an early (very) Ocean Fluke bite. Will be back at it tomorrow on the wrecks and maybe even try a few drifts...

Sea Bassing is on the upswing on the nearshore wrecks. Nearly every stop yesterday produced action. Most fish are still shorts, but is should not be long until we get some nice humpbacks in shore also.     It seems as if the SE swell caused by the low pressure system off of the Carolinas has pushed warm water to the beach. Yesterday, I was getting Ocean readings as high as 60 F. That is quite a jump from the 43 F a couple of weeks ago.         Firs...

Wednesday 5/26/10 we fished with Rich Meleo his son Adam, Tom Danny, John and Herb. The storm to the south brought us a large swell of about 4 to 6 feet. Not sure how that would affect the bottom fishing we ran off to a wreck in 65Â’ of water. The winds were light and it was tide against the wind we decided to drift at this first stop. The water temp was up from the weekend and we read 59 degree surface temp the water along the beach is very dirty with a lot of trash in it. The plan was to wre...

We went off to an 85Â’ wreck for our first stop, where we picked a few keeper sea bass along with a variety of other fish including a few keeper Cod, Conger Eels, Ling and Blackfish. Well, we were skunked yesterday. I would not have believed it, but nary a hit. We covered the area from Ortely Beach down to the Bathing Beach. No bunker to be seen either. Word came that the Bunker were thick off of Bay Head (too far for me).     Interestingly, based on radio chatter is was a very quiet catching day except for one boat that seemingly did pretty well. That boat was trolling stretch 25's in 61 ft. off of the "wheel". The interesting part, the captain s...

I thought it would be fun to preview the next couple months of fishing.     The Winter Flounder season begins on 3/21. How the fishing will be is anyone's guess. Last year it was horrible. Snow Impacts on Fishing   The immediate affects of the recent snow storms is clear as it kept everyone in port and shut down the fish with cold water. I am more concerned with the remaining impact and how it could influence early Spring Bay Fishing. With a deep snow pack over most of the area, there is a LOT of melting to do. How fast and when that happens will be a major factor. If we get a slow "orderly" melt off between now and Spring that would probably be best. Wh...
