Captain Chris Dew and 1st mate Derek were chartered by Clay Parker, Jeff Raver, Max Treese, Roger Burloa, Horace Turbeville and Keith Geohagan of Charlotte, N. C. for a little off shore fishing.
What transpired may sound a little fishy, but it's true. They were fishing the boxcars on the inshore side of the Sharkhole in 69 degree water, when as Keith was reeling in a catch and release sea bass he saw a flounder nail the sea bass. A marine biologist dropped in a...

It is February with a cold front pushing through Texas, Louisiana, Alambama, and approaching fast. Plentiful sunshine and warm air from the Gulf has gotten our water temperature on the rise again. The redfish are stacked up in some of the local community holes and scattered in small groups on the flats. The speckled trout continue to move in and out of the rivers as water temperatures change rapidly from day to day. Flounder have been caught in deep pockets of water as they are awakened by...

You would never know it by this afternoons weather. Jeff and Josh Wallen drove up from Myrtle beach and could not wait to get on the water. I still had a few live shrimp pinned up. The gulps had them chewing. We only fished for a couple of hours and boated 20+ fish a couple of black drum and a small flounder. If you can't figure out what to get the person that has everything, don't forget to give them a day on the water with an OIFC captian fishing.

Thanks to all participants for their support. 192 total boat entries. The first day the better weather allowed the majority of boats to head offshore where most fish were caught in 100 feet of water. On day 2 the majority of teams were forced to stay close due to stronger winds. Funny enough, all 3 of the top fish were caught on Sunday, 2 of which came from small boats fishing just a mile offshore. First place came from100 feet of water while 2nd and 3rd came from Myrlte Beach rocks.

To all our friends back inland, folks you are missing one of the most magnificent times of the year at the beach. This past weekend was beautiful and you should have been here. Bluebird sky, low humidity, perfect temperature, pleasant northeast wind...it don't get no better than this. True, it blew pretty strong keeping offshore boats in shore, but our Brunswick County beaches face south, so any wind out of the northern quadrant is blocked by the land and thus it is flat right on the beach....

Steve and Jim finally got on the water with me today. We tried to battle the rain on Tuesday, but the electricity was just too much. We rescheduled for today. The current was ripping. wind blowing, and water stirred up from both forces. Again, the conditions pushed us to alternative plans. I really wanted to get out on the beach and nearshore wrecks to find flounder and the big reds. The ocean wasn't going to allow that today. We ended up hitting the docks landing 12 reds, 3 grouper, and monst...

Targeting speckled trout? You said you have had lots of success using the gulp shrimp on a jighead, but catching other species as well. That is why I enjoy using artificials. There's honestly not a lot to elaborate on at this minute. The weather is finally warming and water temperatures are into the mid 50's. Offshore, the vertical jigging and trolling along the 30 fathom break will begin to get good this month. On the way back in they stopped at the 460 to sea bass fish. They caught several keepers, but put back many more that were just under size.

This past weekend fishermen caught good Kings at a variety of locations including the Cape Fear River Channel, Yaupon Reef, Shark Hole, Jungle and many more. We have endured several inches of rain the last couple of days. Today was our first break in about 36 hours. We just got another shower of rain a few minutes ago. Thats right folks, the call for action; it's time to go fishing. After enduring the hottest summer and early fall in history, and un-cooperative fish, a weather change has finally come. And with the weather change, it is almost guaranteed the fish will start the delayed fall fishing all out bite. All the rain of today will push the pogies out the river so they should be on the beach fronts in a couple of days, the mullets are everywhere, and the spots are not far behind.

You can't deny the feeling of Fall in the air. You likely know that Fall offers some of the best fishing the area sees, and as far as I'm concerned, it can't come soon enough. However, it will still be another couple of weeks before the Fall fishing really kicks into high gear. Currently water temperatures are still in the mid 80's. And despite lots of recent North wind that has pushed Mullet out of the inlets and onto the beach fronts, the Kings are just not there yet. Look for water temperat...

I hope everyone has started out the New Year on a positive note. Despite being bitterly cold for most of December, a recent reprieve has afforded fishermen opportunites to head offshore. The Bluefin Tuna fishing has been a great disappointment this year, but the recent Wahoo fishing has helped appease drag screaming deprived fishermen. Winter has always been a good time to catch exceptionally large Wahoo, but this Winter the warmer water of 70+ de...

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report 12.04.09
The Bluefin are coming, the Bluefin are coming! One if by land, two if by sea.... or something like that. Here at the OIFC we've got our lanterns poised to give the signal of the arrival of the Bluefin Tuna. Consistent with every early season, rumors have begun to swirl about the possibility of a fish or two being landed and "sightings" are a daily occurence. As water temperatures are finally getting to the optimal range, I anticipate the first Bluefin of the season will be landed...

OIFC NEWS
The coast is all quiet as most folks have headed back inland to shift their attention to hunting, holidays and work. However, the fish are still out there, and Mother Nature wil be offering up windows of good weather in coming weeks. The King Mackerel bite will stay red hot through Christmas as the Kings will gradually work their way offshore, following desired water temperature in the 70 degree range. Currently they are in 70-90 feet and by Thanksgiving they'll be in 80-100 feet....

MOON DOGGIE WINS 2009 YELLOWFIN/OIFC FALL BRAWL KING CLASSIC
Wilmington based brothers, Mark and Billy Emmart fished aboard their boat, Moon Doggie, in the annual Fall Brawl King Classic hosted this weekend out of the Ocean Isle Fishing Center. 170 fishing teams from all across the southeast entered the event and aspired to win the top prize of over $15,000, but this year the Emmart’s punched their ticket and walked away with the big money. Mother Nature did a pretty good j...

On your marks get set..... The 2009 Yellowfin/OIFC Fall Brawl King Classic will be held this weekend from the Ocean Isle Fishing Center. Registration will be available on-site from 12-9pm and on-line registration will remain open until 11:59pm on Friday. The weather is always a consideration when deciding to fish a tournament, and thus a few years back I created a format by which fishermen could choose to fish 1 out of 2 days: Saturday or Sunday. This weekend it looks like this format will com...

FALL BRAWL KING CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND
Despite strong north winds over the weekend, the beach fishing offered not only calm seas but also a good bite from King Mackerel.
Kings were biting up and down the coast from the Cape Fear to Shallotte inlet with the hot spots seeming to be Yaupon Reef and the Cape Fear ship channel. Fish upwards of 40 pounds were reported and here at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center we weighed several fish in the 30 to 35 pound range. The winds did settle for a whi...

FISHING REPORT: Weds- Oct 14th
Despite nasty weather with rain and 20-25 knot northeast winds, there were still fish out there to be caught and fishermen crazy enough to want to catch them- so we went.
Fortunately, the beach bite has been good and the land blocked most of the wind and kept seas a manageable 3-4 feet. We set up anchor on Lighthouse Rocks and began chumming. A spread of live baits under balloons and a kite were set and action was soon to follow. We went 4 for 7 on Kings from...

Greetings Fellow Fishermen and Fisherwomen,
Fall is officially here and both the weather and fish are right on time. The forecast temperatures for this week have highs in the 70's with lows in the 50's and Carolina blue skies. Winds are forecast to shift to north on Tuesday and go light by the middle to the end of the week. Nearshore water temperatures have been holding around 77-79 degrees, but this cool air will bring them into the low to mid 70's which will spark off the annual red hot be...
