Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 03.12.08

NE Florida inshore/nearshore report March, the transition month, is here and we'll be steadily moving from our winter patterns into spring as the water warms. In fact, a customer caught a jack crevalle and a spanish mackerel a couple days ago in St. Augustine, which is a sure sign fish are moving north. There continue to be large numbers of bluefish throughout our area. Sometimes they can be a nuisance when you are targeting other species. Sheephead are biting very well right now at area jetti...

Pine Island Sound Fishing Report 03.11.08

FLORIDA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 3/08/08byCapt. Butch Rickey To say it has been a windy week would be an understatement! Back to back cold fronts have made it difficult to get out at all. I did make it out on Friday. What a day! A big front was scheduled to come through during the night on Friday. As Friday dawned, the forecast was for south winds 15 to 20 with gusts as high as 30! I figured we could handle 15 to 20, and fully expected a good bite on the south wind. After laying awak...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 03.06.08

The tarpon season has finally kicked into gear like it should be for this time of year. The fish are feeding both in the Bay and at Government Cut. The ones at the Cut are of the large variety in the 90+ class. Live shrimp is the bait of choice and it's just a matter of waiting them out till they flood into the area and turn on the feed bag. Don Eichin and his two sons Eric and Randy experienced both the Bay and Cut tarpon action. In the Bay, we caught the very last of the tide and the tarpon...

FLORIDA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 3/01/08byCapt. Butch Rickey Well, another full week was punctuated and reduced to two days on the water this week. That's all to common this time of year. Monday's trip was from my new friend Wayne Wulff, who I fished with back during Christmas week. Wayne had his good friends John Hill, of Nashville, and Rich Watkins, of Indianapolis in town, and wanted to get them out on the water for the full southwest Florida flats fishing experience. John and Ric...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 02.27.08

EXCELLENT sailfishing is the only way to describe it. On some days it's been off the wall. We've had a strong north current with blue water. The sails are being caught all along the South Florida coast mainly in the 90 - 110 foot range. The typical weather patter over the last few days has been light wind in the morning and south wind of 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon. That's when the sails start chomping. Put up the kite and a few flatlines and it won't take long for the action to start. Mix...

Pine Island Sound Fishing Report 02.26.08

FLORIDA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 2/23/08byCapt. Butch Rickey Fishing this week was excellent, and for the most part the catching was, as well. First up on Tuesday were Chuck Kindt and his ten year old son, Chip, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The factors that would control the fishing were an extreme low tide that would be incoming all morning, and we'd just had another front pass. I expected the bite to be slow in spite of the good tide. We headed to the flats adjacent to St. Jam...

Pine Island Sound Fishing Report 02.14.08

FLORIDA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 2/02/08byCapt. Butch Rickey I had a pretty full week scheduled, but by the time it was over it wound up being two trips. Monday brought my first trip with Dan Pease, of Elkhart, Indiana. It would go down as a tough, good, and fun day with a great guy. We had a funky, slow moving outgoing tide in the morning, so we elected to get started at eleven o'clock to fish the incoming tide. We would fish lures. We headed off into the Sound hoping to find a bite...

Apalachicola Bay Fishing Report 02.14.08

Want to try a little fishing in our area? What can you expect to catch?? Well, there’s no telling this time of year…The good news, it’s usually not a hard head catfish when the waters are cool…Just bait up and give it a try, from shore or from our boats! We have had some mild weather the past week with temperatures in the 70s which makes for a beautiful day on the water. We went out a few days ago and caught loads of speckled trout which all were caught and released, we also caught silver...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 02.13.08

As I'm writing this report, we're experiencing some very windy, rainy weather that is coming through the South Florida area. Prior to this, the weather has ranged from almost calm to the point of needing helium to fly the kite to very windy and needing to put up the kite with the holes in it. The air temperature has been perfect with mornings in the upper 60's to low 70's and the daytime temperatures in the 70's. Throughout this range of wind conditions, the one constant has been that there ha...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 02.07.08

The robins flew through last week headed north, hopefully, spring isn't too far away! Water temps are in the low 50's. Speckled trout are closed here in NE Florida this month, but can still be caught on a catch and release basis. Just be extra careful releasing them. I've had the best luck along the ICW drop-offs with live shrimp, plastics, and Gulp baits fished on 1/4 oz. jigs. Try to shake them off without touching them. Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 02.04.08

Both the offshore and inshore fishing continues to be good. Fair numbers of dolphin have shown up and are in the 5 - 25 pound range. They're being found in a wide range of depths from 150 - 650 feet. The dolphin are being found along weedlines, under birds, and on the blue side of a blue/green color change. Sailfish are being caught on an almost daily basis. Depending on what kind of current there is or isn't, the water clarity and color, and how much wind will determine the numbers of sails t...

FLORIDA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 1/26/08byCapt. Butch Rickey It was another short week for us guides. Heavy fog several days kept many of us in port. I wound up fishing Tuesday, and conducting a dockside seminar on Thursday. My Tuesday trip was with an old friend, Gerard Ripo, and his buddies Mark Pidro and Sean Martin. Local boys! I had fished with Sean once before on our last trip, but this was the first time for meeting Mark. At the dock that morning neither bait nor fishing repo...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 01.29.08

Tarpon fishing is on fire. That's the only way to describe it. They've been feeding in the late afternoon and then after dark, the water has come alive with shrimp and the feeding continues everywhere we have been drifting. The fish have been averaging 30 - 60 pounds with some a bit larger. We have been averaging 5 - 6 fish per trip. Offshore the sailfishing has been very steady with a few days when it's been off the scale. Those off the scale days are usually when the sea conditions are up an...

Just ask Lake Erie walleye guide Rick Millette of Erie Quest Charters Pardon the exaggeration, but it makes the point. Fish are taken just about anywhere from Maumee Bay to the reef complex off Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station between Toledo and Port Clinton, and action...

Vancouver Island BC Fishing Report 01.25.08

The 2008 saltwater sport fishery is approaching and local anglers can expect to see more fish in the Georgia Strait this coming season as there seems to have been a significant change to the good in the last two years. The large number of under-sized Chinooks that took up residence in the Strait from Feb/March of 2007 until present, are feeding well and seem to be happy staying put. Many of these fish have reached legal size and if they stay to feed on the influx of migrating herring that are...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 01.22.08

The winter weather has definitely arrived in South Florida. A cold front comes through, we have windy weather, the seas build, then they subside and the wind dies off, we have a day or two of calm weather and then the cycle begins again. This weather pattern brings good sailfishing offshore. Throw in some kingfish action along with a few dolphin (mahi-mahi) and that makes for some good fishing action. Move inshore and the shrimp get stirred up by the wind and cooler temperatures. This in turn...

Vancouver Island BC Fishing Report 01.18.08

With the 2008 saltwater sport fishery approaching quickly, and the great memories of last year still being talked about, most anglers can’t wait to hear the reels screamin’ again. Last year’s Chinook fishery in our favorite hotspots in and around AREA 14, which includes Courtenay / Comox, Denman & Hornby Islands all the way to Parksville exceeded most anglers expectations. Larger numbers of herring kept the fish feeding around most of the summer. Big and Little Qualicum River runs were...

Pine Island Sound Fishing Report 01.14.08

Only one trip to talk about this week. In the last three weeks we've gone from record warm weather, to record cold, and back to record warm. Fishing has been very tough since the big cold front, and bait has all but disappeared. I talked to one guide who had gone offshore and gotten a couple dozen shiners, but commented that it was a couple of hours wasted because nothing would eat it. My trip was on Wednesday, and was the first with Eric "Rick" Hubbs, of Cape May, New Jersey. Rick i...
