Provo River Fishing Report 04.17.12

Middle Provo River: Flows out of Jordanelle Dam are currently at 150 cfs. The continued stable flow is offering great action utilizing both dry fly tactics as well as fishing below with a nymph rig. The dry fly action has picked up due to the presence of Aprils Blue Wing Olive (BWO). As usual the very best action is on the overcast or stormy days similar to what we experienced last week. Action is beginning around the 1pm lasting as late as 7pm. Included in the mix of aquatic bug life a...

Weber River Fishing Report 09.15.11

Fishing conditions on our local waters are in really great shape right now. Flows on the Provo dropped recently, and are now at 302 cfs on the Middle and 433 cfs on the Lower! Dry fly fishing has picked up and the drop in flows seems to have helped. In the mornings, caddis dries have been quite productive. Throughout the day, fish can be caught on the surface by skating caddis dries to imitate egg layers. Depending on the day, the mornings/afternoons can also offer a decent Pale Morning...

Provo River Fishing Report 08.19.11

Fishing is Utah is on fire right now and not just the Provo River. Most small streams are at a great level right now and are fishing great. The Weber is also at a great flow and has been a lot of fun the past couple weeks. As expected, the trout are eating sow bugs over there as well as PMD and Caddis nymphs. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to throw some hoppers along the banks as well...         On the Middle Provo PMDs and Caddis are also a major food source...

Provo River Fishing Report 07.13.11

The Provo has dropped significantly this week, and as of this morning, the Middle is at 813 cfs and the Lower is at 923 cfs! With the river dropping, more and more fishable water is opening up for anglers. The new flow should also warm the river up to a more favorable temperature for our summertime hatches... like Green Drakes!   The past few days there have been a few Green Drake sightings on the river, but the water has still been a little too cold. With the water...

Provo River Fishing Report 06.28.11

Utah's Provo River is experiencing similar flow conditions as most other western streams.   Fortunately the Middle reach is flowing threw the Heber Valley at 1200cfs. This flow certainly is not optimum , but it is fish-able. For the savoy nymph fisherman that can read water there are fish to be caught. In fact once the fish are found the bite is on. Recommended patterns are San Jauns, large Sowbugs, Pale Morning Dun and Green Drake nymphs.   The Lower Provo flowing below De...

Provo River Fishing Report 04.13.11

Both the Middle and Lower are running fairly high right now but the river seems to have adjusted for this and is fishing very well! The first few days after the big bump in water flows the fish seemed to be more keyed into sow bugs and san juan worms, but the past week or so the fish are back on Blue Wing Olives. If you are on the bottom half of the Middle or the Lower, sows are more of a food source, but regardless of where you are BWO nymphs have been working very well. Mos...

Provo River Fishing Report 03.08.11

The fishing the past couple of weeks has really picked up. The flows are a little higher than we normally see this time of year but the fishing has been very good. The Lower Provo is nymphing very well and we are starting to see some risers for buffalo midge and a few early BWO's. Fishing subsurface, sow bugs are always a good idea on the Lower. In addition to sows, we have been doing well with black buffalo midge nymphs in a size 18-20, BWOs in the same size, and pale midges. We are still a l...

Provo River Fishing Report 02.09.11

If its been awhile since you've last been out, we are seeing some bigger size midges! There are still plenty of the of little olive, black, and pale colored midges in a size 22/24 but we are starting to see some of out larger sized buffalo midge in a dark color and a size 20 or bigger. Hatch times seem to vary depending on the day and weather. On a real nice day the hatch can get started around as early as 10, other days it seems to be more like 12. 10-3 are the best hours to go out if you wan...

Provo River Fishing Report 10.28.10

Middle Provo It is a great time of year to fish the Middle Provo. The water is down from our summer flows and is coming out of the dam at 242 cfs. With this lower flow, the dry fly fishing has been phenomenal! This past week's cold front has made the Blue Wing Olives start to hatch heavily, the BWOs are now out in full force! The cloudier the day, the better you can expect the BWO hatch to be! The colder weather has not seemed to impact the PMDs however. We are still seeing great Pale Mor...

Weber River Fishing Report 10.28.10

The Weber River has been fishing great recently. If you stumble upon a BWO hatch, the dry fly fishing can be very good; however, nymphing has proven to be more consistent and successful. Small BWO, sow bug, and san juan worm nymphs have been working well for us recently. Also, throwing streamers this time of year can be a blast on the Weber and a great way to catch the larger fish.

Provo River Fishing Report 08.30.10

Middle Provo The fishing up by the dam in the morning has been great on small midge patterns. By noon, fish switch over to PMD nymphs and caddis larvae. The entire river has an abundance of caddis larvae and PMD nymphs, stop in the shop and we can show you some of our favorite patterns to nymph with. In the very late part of the afternoon, you'll see PMD adults on the river and be able to cast your dry fly. At dusk, the caddis fishing is excellent. Don't be afraid to fish after dark,...

Provo River Fishing Report 04.07.10

The fishing on the Lower Provo continues to be great. The most productive fishing has been nymph fishing. The fishing in the morning has been very productive on black, grey and red midge nymphs, sizes 18-24. As the day heats up and the baetis start to hatch the fish start to move to the faster more shallow riffles. At that time start to switch over to BWO nymphs or dry flies in sizes 16-20.     The Middle Provo is starting to take form and has been fishing much better in the la...

Provo River Fishing Report 03.26.10

Fishing is excellent right now on the Provo River! Blue Wing Olives are dominating the Lower river. There isn't a better time to follow the hatch as it makes its way up the water column. Start fishing deep earlier in the day with your favorite sow or midge and a beatis nymph. As the day goes on watch for flashes subsurface and shorten your rig so flies are suspended in the strike zone. Try switching to blue wing emergers at this time as well. Afternoons generally have surface activity any...

Provo River Fishing Report 02.11.10

Utah's Provo River system is starting to show signs of things to come! The last couple of days fishing the middle reach flowing in the Heber Valley, great dry fly opportunity's have continued.  Along with the traditional #22 -#24 midge, we are beginning to notice a few of the larger Buffalo Midge #18 in the mix. With every tick of the clock, time is on our side. We are days away from this larger midge hatch to increase in intensity. By mid February it will be on. For those that can we...
