Fishing Reports

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 07.23.12

Summer fishing off Anna Maria means getting on and off the water early. Most of my trips are half day this time of year and that is just fine with me. Mackerel fishing on the beaches could not be much better. In fact on some days it can just about be to fast. I try my best to keep track of how many fish go in the box, keeping the bigger fish to fillet. Most days when we get back to the dock the charter can not believe how many they kept. Snook are also on the beaches. Just about eve...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 04.16.12

Spring Fishing 2012 It is "what do you want to fish for" time again. Just about everything that swims is on the prowl now off of Anna Maria. Big Sow sheepshead or in full spawn mode. Resident Tarpon are at the Sunshine Skyway. Snook and reds are on the shallow flats around the mangroves. Gator trout or on the deeper flats as well as spanish mackerel, pompano and bluefish. Just off the beaches the first kingfish of the year are starting there run. There are also reports of Cobi...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 03.02.12

It is that time of year again. Anglers have to make a choice of what to fish for. Just about everything with fins is on the prowl. Tarpon are at the skyway bridge, Giant black drum are roaming the outside bars, Snook and Reds are in the shallow flats around the mangroves, big trout and spanish mackerl are on the deeper flats around the passes. Sheepshead are in full blown spawning mode we caught a ten pounder this past week. There are rummers of kingfish off the beaches and around the s...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 02.17.12

I had the pleasure to fish with Dick Williams from Tennessee on wednesday this week. The wind was up just enough to keep us from going out to the reefs so we fished on the inside flats around longboat key and anna maria island. The tide was low when we started so we fished the edges of some big flats and the mouths of canals. Mirro-lure little jon jigs in the new penny color was the bait of choice. We caught flounder, pompano and school size speckled trout for about an hour into the incomin...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 02.02.12

It is hard to tell we are still in winter here in Anna Maria. Water temps are more like mid spring. As a result the fish are not in typical patterns for this time of year. To stay ahead of the game you have to be flexible. Sheepshead have been on the slow side this winter. The past week it has started to pick up with bigger fish as well as better numbers of fish. Next weeks full moon should start a full blown spawn and the fishing will really get good. Pompano are also starting to...

Sarasota Bay Fishing Report 01.20.12

Today we tried fishing the edges of some big flats on sarasota bay with little to no luck. I think we caught two small flounder before switching to dock fishing. Structure is still the way to go. The first dock produced as soon as we got set up with small reds in the fourteen to sixteen inch range. We moved all of a hundred yards to another dock that produced sheepshead and more small reds. After the action slowed I headed back north to Anna Maria sound and fished docks around the bayside o...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 12.22.11

The wintertime bite is still very good in our area around Anna Maria. It is just a matter of finding the right dock or patch of rocks that is holding the fish. Fresh shrimp is the ticket they do not even have to be live to work. The last couple of trips reds and sheepshead have made up most of the catch. The reds are running on the small side of the slot from eighteen inches to about twenty two inches. Most of the sheepshead are in the pound to three pound range. We are catching arou...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 12.13.11

Got a little lazy the last couple of trips instead of using shiners I bought ten dozen shrimp. Anytime the water temp drops into the mid sixties it seems the fish respond better to shrimp. This trip held true to form and shrimp worked great! Redfish and trout started the rally. It wasn't long before we got into sheepshead, black drum and a few small snook. The highlight of the day was a pompano that pulled the boga grip scale to just shy of six pounds. The world record is eight pou...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 11.23.11

Went grouper fishing last tuesday just before the closing. We limited out on gags to fifteen pounds by ten in the morning. Almost every drop was a fish. Never made it to the number I was heading for After we had our limit of gags we started to fish for kingfish with flat lines and shiners. Lots of schoolies from eight to ten pounds with a few bigger fish as well. Inshore the fish are starting to head to the backcountry with every passing front. Protected water is the name of the game f...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 06.27.11

Every day is different one day your tarpon fishing and the next your fishing for trout with a young family and kids. It does not seem to matter the fishing is still good around Anna Maria Island. Today we just wanted to bend rods so out to the reefs we went. Once there the mackerel bite was unbelievable. Nice size fish up to five pounds where just about everywhere around the boat. Not long after the mack attack sharks started to show up. Sandbar sharks from two feet to four feet made for great...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 05.23.11

I fished tarpon for the most part this last week with good results. Both the passes and beaches are producing fish. For what it's worth crabs seem to get the nod early in the day and shiners and pinfish work better when the sun gets up. Most fish are in the eighty to hundred and twenty pound range.         http://sarasotafishingwithrick.com      ...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 05.04.11

The tarpon bite is going off at the Sunshine Skyway. Boats are reporting as many as fourteen hookups in a morning. The fish are running in the seventy to ninety pound range.     Kingfish are still off our coast when you can get out to them. Along with the kings are big Mangrove Snapper and a few keeper Grouper.   The trout bite is still good on our deeper grass flats. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel help mix things up during the trout bite. We got one mackerel that went...

Manatee River Fishing Report 04.15.11

We must have caught thirty kings from eight to fifteen pounds in a morning's fishing. The bite was as fast as you could get a bait into the water. We were fishing in forty foot of water due west of Anna Maria on a artificial reef. Live pilchards on a 2/0 hook with a trace of light wire was doing the trick. In the afternoon we fished the mouth of the Manatee river and caught eight keeper trout up to twenty inches.       Good Fishing!   Capt. Rick Gross  ...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 03.30.11

Fishing this past week on the Fishy Business out of Catcher's Marina has been great. With water temps in the low seventies just about everything is on the feed.   On Monday morning I fished the beaches and nearshore reefs with George Vensel and crew. We caught sheepshead, spanish macks, white grunts and catch and release grouper. That afternoon we fished the flats around some oyster bars and caught five redfish up to twenty-four inches all on live shrimp.   Glen Heller fis...

Gulf of Mexico (Anna Maria Island) Fishing Report 03.22.11

Anglers have a decision to make this time of year. Do you want to fish the resident Tarpon at the Skyway Bridge and then fish for Snook, Reds and Trout on the flats. Or do you want to fish the beaches for Kings, Grouper, Cobia, and Permit and then fish the flats. With water temp. reaching seventy degrees just about everything with fins will be looking for something to eat.     With the economy still slow I have a few openings.   Give me a call and you to will have to m...
